Three people are employed in agriculture. In the 1850 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, Allen is a 31-year-old, Kentucky-born farmer with real estate worth $2,150. His household contains his 29-year-old wife, Margaret Ditmars McCaslin, their children, 7-year-old Elanson G, 3-year-old Mary A and 10 month old Sarah A, and his father, 82-year-old, David. In the 1860 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, Allen is a 41-year-old farmer with real estate with $6,300 and personal property worth $700. In his household are his 40-year-old wife Margaret Ditmars McCaslin, and their children, 17-year-old Elanson G, 14-year-old Mary A, 8-year-old William O and 5-year-old Harriet D. Allen's farmstead is next to that of his second cousin, Emily McCaslin Covert and those of his first cousins once removed, Alexander McCaslin and James R McCaslin A [Allen David] McCaslin is a farmer, whose land is 1-3/4 miles south of Franklin. He was born in Kentucky in 1818. He settled in Johnson County in 1829. He was a Republican and a Presbyterian. In the 1880 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 61-year-old farmer Allen McCaslin and his 59-year-old wife Margaret [Ditmars] have in their household their 26-year-old son William O. Allen is living near his cousins, Alexander McCaslin and Samuel H Covert. From "The History of Johnson County 1888" by Judge Banta: "Allen McCaslin, a highly respected pioneer and citizen of Johnson County, was born in Shelby County, KY, September 30, 1818, son of David and Mary (Marrs) McCaslin. The former was born in Wythe County, VA, about 1767, and his death occurred in Johnson County, IN, December 17 1850; the latter was born in Pennsylvania about 1777, and died May 18, 1841. The subject of this biographical sketch came to Johnson County in 1829 and settled on the farm where he now resides. He attended school in the old log schoolhouse, which stood near the Presbyterian Church of Franklin. By occupation M.r McCaslin is a farmer and owns a valuable farm. He was united in marriage November 5, 1840, to Miss Margaret Ditmars, a native of Somerset County, N. J., born October 3, 1820, daughter of Garrett and Sarah (Verbryck) Ditmars. Mr. and Mrs. McCaslin have had five children, two of whom yet live, namely: William 0., born 1851 and Harriet D., 1855. He has been a member of the Presbyterian Church for fifty years, and for forty years has been an elder, and for forty-eight years his wife has been a member of the same church. The Franklin Republican, Friday, April 13, 1888 Additional Local Allen McCaslin fell from a wagon the first of the week, and struck his head on a stone, and is in a very precarous condition. The Franklin Republican, April 20, 1888 Mr Allen McCaslin died at his home just south of Frank- lin, on Sunday evening, at 7 o'clock, from injuries received by a fall a few days previous to his death. Funeral services were held at his late residence, at 3:30 o'clock on Monday after- noon conducted by Rev. E. M. McMillen. Mr. McCaslin was a life long and consistent mem- ber of the Presbyterian church; and for a number of years Dea- can [sic] in the church; he was one of Johnson county's best citizens, and highly esteemed by all who knew him. He lived an exemplary life--one worthy of imitation. Allen David McCaslin, born 30 Sep 1818, in Shelby County, Kentucky, died 15 Apr 1888 in Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, and was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Franklin, Johnson, Indiana (Find A Grave Memorial# 84455854).
