Shared note

Andrew McCaslin applied for David M McCaslin's bounty land on 11 May 1848, saying that David had neither wife nor child when he died at Mexico City in 1847. The reasoning is, as his father and nearest kin (term is heir-in-law), Andrew should get the land and he did, 160 acres on 11 July 1848. The facts are sworn to be true by Andrew's brother, Hervey McCaslin, and Harvey Sloan. This is the only evidence that I have found for David being Andrews son.

In the 1850 US Federal Census for Graham, Jefferson, Indiana, 55-year-old farmer Andrew McCasland [sic McCaslin] and his wife Mary [McCartney McCaslin] have in their household their farmer sons, 21-year-old James, 19-year-old Henry L [Harvey L] and 16-year-old William. The McCaslin family is living next door to Andrews brother-in law 66-year-old James McCartney and his children, 40-year-old Sarah, 35-year-old William, 30-year-old Martha, 21-year-old Jane and 19-year-old Ellen.

In the 1860 US Federal Census for Jackson, Brown, Indiana, 65-year-old Andrew McCaslin is a farmer with $360 in real estate and $30 in personal property. In his household is his 68-year-old wife, Mary [McCartney] McCaslin.

Mary McCartney McCaslin died before 9 Mar 1861 as that is the date on which her husband, Andrew McCaslin, marries Rebecca [Williams] Hutchison.

In the 1870 US Federal Census for Jackson, Brown, Indiana, 74-year-old Andrew McCaslin is a farmer with $300 worth of real estate and $200 worth of personal property. Mary appears to have died as Andrew has Rebecca [Williams Hutchison] McCaslin as the only other person in his household. She is keeping house and is his second wife.
