Indiana McCaslins

In the 1820 US Federal Census for Scott County, Indiana, Elisabeth McCaslin is head of household. In her household are one male between 10 and 16 (Richard), two males between 18 and 26 (John, David, Alexander and James are in this age category, so two sons are missing, however John married in 1820 so is probably not living at home), one femaie between 16 and 26 (Peggy) and one female between 26 and 45 (herself).Two people are engaged in agriculture. The McCaslin family is living in the vicinity of the Sellers family as they are on adjoining pages of the census. David and Alexander will marry Sellers sisters in 1822.

Having gotten them to Scott County I then requested LDS Microfilm #1305330 Item 1, Deed record v. A cont., June 1823- Mar. 1827 Scott County, Indiana. On pages 321, 354, and 364, I found indentures in which, on 22 October 1824, the McCaslin family was exchanging land ownership among themselves per a court order. I am looking for this court order to see why this was ordered. However these documents contain the following information:

1. Elizabeth Wilson McCaslin has remarried and now is Elizabeth Carr. Although James Carr is living, Elizabeth is representing herself in court and has no male representative. She signed the documents with a mark.

2. Two of the parties to this agreement are Gara and Esther Davis. Gara Davis married Esther Parker McCaslin on 10 Mar 1824. Esther Parker married John McCaslin, Richard and Elizabeth's oldest child, on 8 June 1820 in Scott County. John McCaslin must of died "before 1824" or John would be the one mentioned in these indentures. Gara and Esther Davis are involved in these McCaslin indentures because of her previous marriage. They signed these documents with a mark.

3. David McCaslin, Richard and Elizabeth's second child, and Polly (Sellers), his wife, also signed these documents, he with a signature and she with a mark. I have always wondered if David and Alexander married their wives in a double ceremony since Polly (Mary) and Betsy (Elizabeth) were sisters.

4. James McCaslin, Richard and Elizabeth's third child, and Elizabeth (Carr), his wife, also signed these documents, he with a signature and she with a mark. James married first Elizabeth Carr on 17 June 1823. Elizabeth died before Sep 1867 when James married Adaline Patterson. This is confirmed by the 1870 census when James was 70 and Adaline 40.

5. Alexander McCaslin, Richard and Elizabeth's fourth child, and Elizabeth (Sellers), his wife, also signed these documents, he with a signature and she with a mark.

6. Margaret McCaslin (also known as Peggy), Richard and Elizabeth's fifth child and only daughter, signed the documents with a mark. She married Jesse Carr 25 October 1825 in Scott county.

7. Richard McCaslin, Richard and Elizabeth's sixth child, signed these documents. He was not married at the time of the indentures, but married Lucy Rice on 27 April 1826 in Scott County.

In the 1830 US Federal Census for Township not stated, Henry County, Indiana, Jesse Carr has in his household two males under 5 (Samuel and Richard), one male between 20 and 30 (himself) and one female between 20 and 30 (his wife, Margaret)

In the 1840 US Federal Census for Franklin, Henry, Indiana, Jesse has in his household two males between 10 and 15 (Samuel and Richard), one male between 30 and 40 (himself), one female between 5 and 10 (unknown) and one female between 30 and 40 (his wife, Margaret)

In the 1850 US Federal Census for Tipton, Cass, Indiana, Kentucky-born Margaret McCaslin Carr is head of household and owns $800 worth of real estate. Her age is recorded as 37 rather than 46. She is fibbling a little as she has a 23 -year-old son. Living with her are her Indiana-born children, 23-year-old Samuel, 21-year-old Richard and 9-year-old Levi. Samuel and Richard are listed as persons over 21 who cannot read and write.

Margaret died 28 August 1855 and was buried in Deer Creek Cemetery, Onward, Cass, Indiana (Find A Grave Memorial# 20469326).
