Shared note

From History of Johnson County Indiana 1888 by Judge D.D. Banta: Jesse Y. Demaree is the son of George W. and Sarah W. (Young) Demaree. The father was born in Mercer, County, Ky., March 29 1812 and died in this county, October 13, 1851, and the mother was born in Pennsylvania, April 16, 1814, and died in this county August 15, 1864. They were married in this county January 25, 1838. This marriage resulted in the birth of the following children: Jesse Y., David M., deceased, Robert B. deceased, Margaret J., Rachel E., deceased, Elizabeth M. About 1835, George W. Demaree came to this county and lived here until he died. He entered the farm our subject now lives on. He was a zealous member of the Presbyterian Church, in which church he served as elder. The subject of this sketch was born and reared on the farm he now owns. He received a fair education by atending the country schools. He has followed farming as an occupation. He was married April 3, 1865, wedding Mary M. Miller, who is the daughter of William and Rhoda Miller. She lived but a short time after this marriage. In 1872, October 3, Mr. Demaree married for a second wife, Margaret A Winchester, daughter of John M. and Harriet Winchester. Mrs. Demaree was born in this county September 6, 1852. The children born onto the second marriage of our subject were: Mary Ester, Hattie, Sarah E, deceased, Bertha Jane, Mabel Edna deceased, Byron M. and John R. Our subject began the battle of life for himself at an early day. His father died when he was but thirteen years old, and to support the widowed mother and the family placed upon him much responsibility; but he succeeded in his efforts, and now owns the old homestead his father entered, excepting forty acres. He volunteered in Company F, Seventh Indiana Regiment, in August, 1861, as a private, and was engaged at the battle of Winchester, Va., in 1862, where he received a gunshot wound in the left thigh, and this necessitated his discharge in October, 1862. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church, as is also his wife. He is a Master Mason of Union Village Lodge, No. 545.

The 1870 US Federal Census for Union, Johnson, Indiana, 30-year-old Indiana-born farmer, Jesse Y Demaree and his 26-year-old Indiana-born wife Mary M [Miller] Demaree have in their household their daughter, 4-year-old Anthony Gertrude [Antonia?] born in Illinois, and a hired man 22-year-old James Chitwood. Neither Antonia Gertrude nor Jesse's move to and from Illinois are mentioned in D.D. Banta's History of Johnson County 1888.

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Union, Johnson, Indiana, 41-year-old Indiana-born farmer, Jesse Y Demaree and his 27-year-old Indiana-born second wife Margaret [Winchester] Demaree have in their household their Indiana-born children, 6-year-old Mary E Demaree, 4-year-old Hattie and 8-month old Bertha, and 21-year-old Indiana-born farm hand Orval Holiday. No one was sick the on 18 Jun 1880, day the census was taken. Jesse's father was born in Kentucky and his mother in Pennsylvania. Everyone else's parents were born in Indiana.

In the 1900 US Federal Census for Union, Johnson, Indiana, 61-year-old Indiana-born farmer, Jesse Y Demaree (Dec 1838) and his 47-year-old Indiana-born second wife Maggie [Margaret Winchester] Demaree (Sep 1852) have been married 26-years and have had 11 children, eight are living. They have in their household six of their Indiana-born children, 24-year-old Hattie (Oct 1875), 20-year-old Bertha (Oct 1879), 15-year-old Byron (Aug 1884), 13-year-old Ray (Aug 1886) [sic], 8-year-old Ralph (Feb 1892) and 5-year-old Mark (Jul 1894), and 25-year-old Indiana-born hired man John Hollenback (May 1875). Everyone can read, write and speak English except Ralph and Mark. Byron and Ray have attended school 6 months of the past year. Jesse's father was born in Kentucky and his mother in Pennsylvania. Everyone else's parents were born in Indiana.

Jesse Y Demaree died on 4 Nov 1902 and is buried in First Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, Section G Row 1 Stone 4 next to his wife and some of his children.
