Shared note | In the 1880 US Federal Census for Sand Creek, Dunn, Wisconsin, 51-year-old Norwegian-born grocer Ole and his 28-year-old Norwegian-born wife Olava [Halderson] Madson have in their household their Wisconsin-born children. 6-year-old Juli Marie, 5-year-old Hermand [sic], and one-year-old Martin. In the 1900 US Federal Census for Sand Creek, Dunn, Wisconsin, 71-year-old Norwegian-born merchant Ole and his 48-year-old Norwegian-born wife Olava [Halderson] Madson have been married 27 years and have had eight children, but only five are living. Three of the five, all Wisconsin-born, are living with them. They are 25-year-old clerk Herman, 18-year-old milner Minnie and 12-year-old school girl Otillia [sic] Clara. The family is living in a house that Ole owns, free of mortgage. Otilia has attended school nine months of the past year. Everyone can read, write and speak English. Ole and Herman have had no months unemployed in the past year, but Minnie has had six months without employment. Ole emigrated from Norway in 1862 and has been in the United States for 38 years. Olava emigrated from Norway in 1871 and has been in the United States for 29 years. Neither are naturalized citizens. Everyone's parents were born in Norway. In the 1910 US Federal Census for Radisson, Sawyer, Wisconsin, 57-year-old Norwegian-born widow Olive [sic] [Olava Halderson] Madson is head of household with her own income. She owns her home free of mortgage. Living with her are her 34-year-old Wisconsin-born son Herman (partner in a general store), her 26-year-old Wisconsin-born daughter-in-law (and Hermans wife) Julia, and her 22-year-old Wisconsin-born daughter Otelia (a sales lady at the general store). Herman and Julia have been married within the year and have no children. Everyone in this family can read, write and speak English. All their parents were born in Norway. |
