Indiana McCaslins

In the 1910 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 35-year-old farmer William and his 32-year-old wife Hattie M have in their household their only child, 7-year-old Elizabeth M and William's 42-year-old sister, Martha B. William's farmstead is near that of his brother John and his cousin Everett M McCaslin.

Hamilton, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Hamilton, also of Hopwell, occurred at the home of the bride's parents, Thurs- day evening. About one hundred and twenty- five guests witnessed the ceremony which was pronounced by the Rev. J. B. Ferguson. Miss Vera List pre- sided at the piano and played Lohengrin's Wedding March, while the bridal party entered the living room and took their places before a bank of flowers, where the impres- sive marriage vows were plighted. A single ring ceremony was used. Little Rosemary Ferguson acted as ring bearer. The bride wore a beautiful gown of white messaline trimmed in real lace. She carried a bouquet of bride's roses. Little Miss Ferguson was dressed in white and wore pink bows on her hair. The home was very tastefully decorated, chrysanthemums being used in profusion. In the living room the color scheme was green and white, in the hall and parlor red and green and in the dining room pink and white. Following the ceremony refresh- ments of Neapolitan cream, angel food, coffee and mints were served. The bridal table was adorned with a large French basket filled with pink chrysanthemums and lighted by pink candles. Presiding in the dining room were intimate friends of the bride. They were the Misses Bonnie Wright, Lola Brock, Nannie Parkhurst, Ha- zel Combs, Clara Bell McCaslin, and Elizabeth McCaslin. Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton are two of Hopewell's most respected young people. The bride attended high school at Trafalgar, while Mr. Hamilton is a graduate of the Hopewell high school. They have gone to housekeeping on the Ham- ilton farm in a new bungalow re- cently built and furnished by the groom. They have the good wishes of a large circle of friends. About forty were present. Because of the rain, a big table was spread in a wagon shed, where a delightful pic- nic dinner was served. Those pres- ent were: Mr. and Mrs. George Mc- Caslin, Mr. and Mrs. John Z Hol- comb and daughter, Beaulah, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Hendricks, Thomas Alexander and family, Mr. and Mrs. R. N. McCaslin and daughter, Clara belle, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Hamilton and son Lawrence Hugh, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil McCaslin and son Max, Mr. and Mrs. George Alexander and son, Thomas, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. McCaslin and daughter Elizabeth Louise [sic], and Miss Belle McCaslin. Special guests were T. C. List and Mr. and Mrs. Will Chandlier and son Gordon.

In the 1920 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 45-year-old farmer William and his 43-year-old wife Hattie M [Halstead] McCaslin have in their household their two daughters, 17-year-old Elizabeth M and 6-year-old Ellanor [Eleanor]. William's farmstead is still near that of his brother John.

In the 1930 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 56-year-old Indiana-born farmer William and his 54-year-old Indiana-born wife Hattie M [Halstead] McCaslin have been married 31 years. They have in their household their two Indiana-born daughters, 24-year-old Elizabeth M [she is 27] and 17 -year-old Louise [Ellanor]. Also living with them is their hired man, 56-year-old Herbert Ridley who is listed as a "negro" in the terminology of the time. William's farmstead is still near that of his brother John.

In the 1940 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 65-year-old Indiana-born farmer William and his 63-year-old Indiana-born wife Hattie M [Halstead] McCaslin have in their household their 37-year old Indiana-born daughter Marth [sic] E McCaslin and a lodger, 14-year-old Indiana-born Myrtle M Kidd. This household is living on a farm on State Road #144. The McCaslins were living in the same house in 1935, but Myrtle was living in Chicago, Cook, Illinois in that year. William and Hattie completed the eighth grade. Martha completed high school. Myrtle has completed the seventh grade and is attending school. William is employed as the owner/operator of a farm. He worked 52 weeks of the past year and has worked 84 hours in the past week. He has received no wages nor salary and has no outside source of income. Hattie is a housewife and is not looking for work. She has no outside source of income. Martha is a clerk in notions store, has worked 52 weeks of the past year and 24 hours in the past week. She has earned $260 in wages or salary and has no outside source of income. Myrtle is a student and is not looking for work. She has no outside source of income.

Betty McCaslin rites Monday Martha Elizabeth "Betty" McCaslin, for many years a reporter with the Franklin Evening star, died this morning at the Johnson County Memorial Hospital at the age of 73. She had been in failing health for the past five years. Her last address in Franklin was 1854 West Jefferson Street. She was born in Franklin township on September 2, 1902 and was the daughter of W. Edgar and Mattie [sic, Hattie] Mae (Halstead) McCaslin. She attended Hopewell High School and was a life-long member of the United Hopewell Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Paul (Louise) Sievertson, Franklin and five nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. at the Hopewell Presbyterian Church. They will be conducted by Rev. Leon Smith. Transcribed by Lois Johnson
