Indiana McCaslins

In the 1860 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 43-year-old John McCaslin is a prosperous farmer with $7,000 worth of real estate and $1,500 worth of personal property. He and his 29-year-old wife Martha (Alexander) McCaslin have in their household their children, 8-year-old Indiana-born George A, 4-year-old Indiana-born Robert N, and a child not listed in D.D. Bantas History of Johnson County Indiana 1888, 1-year-old Indiana-born Emily J. The McCaslins are living next door to Marthas brother Thomas H Alexander, Johns sister Sarah (McCaslin) Alexander and their family. In the McCaslin household is 22-year-old Indiana-born farm laborer Stephen B Alexander, another of Martha's brothers.

In the 1870 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, John McCaslin (recorded as McCoslin) is a 45-year-old farmer with real estate worth $8,560 and personal property worth $2895. He and his 42-year-old wife Martha have in their household their children, 18-year-old George, 13-year-old Robert N and 3-year-old Martha B, and an 18-year-old domestic servant Mary E Turman. The McCaslins are no longer living next door to the Alexanders. I'm not sure which family moved.

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 54-year-old John McCaslins farm is five farmsteads away from that of his cousin, David A McCaslin (David Wason McCaslins son). John and his 50-year-old wife Martha J have in their household their children, 24-year-old Robert N, 13-year-old Martha B, 9-year-old John A and 5-year-old William and a hired man, 21-year-old Levi Glover. John and Marthas oldest son, 28-year-old Indiana-born George and his 24-year-old Indiana-born wife Luna M [List] McCaslin have the farmstead next door.

In the 1900 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 44-year-old Indiana-born farmer Robert N and his 34-year-old Indiana-born wife Susan [Byers] McCaslin have been married eight years and have had one child, their Indiana-born daughter, one-year-old Clara B. Also in their household, are Susan's parents, 77-year-old Kentucky-born Henry S and 74-year-old Kentucky-born Maria [McCauley] Byers, who have been married 55 years and have had thirteen children, eight of whom are living. The family employs three servants, 71-year-old Ohio-born widow Nancy Sutter (nurse), and a couple, Kentucky-born 33-year-old Frank Grant (hired hand) and Kentucky-born 33-year-old Mollie Grant (housekeeper). Henry Byers and the Grants cannot read and write. The rest of the adults in this household are literate. Robert's father was born in Indiana and his mother in Tennessee; Susan's parents were born in Kentucky. Henry S parents were born in Kentucky; Maria's father was born in Scotland and her mother in Kentucky.

In the 1910 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 54-year-old Indiana-born farmer Robert N and his 53-year-old Indiana-born wife Susan [Byers] McCaslin have been married seventeen years and have had one child, their Indiana-born daughter, 11-year-old Clara B. Also in their household, are a 56-year-old Indiana-born servant Ella Pierce and Robert's sister-in-law, 61-year-old Indiana-born widow Sarah A [Byers] Vandivier. Sarah has borne one child, 37-year-old Indiana-born farmer Elmer [sic Elmore] Vandivier. Elmore and his family are living next door. Everyone is literate except Ella Pierce. All speak English. Clara has attended school in the past year. Robert owns his farm free of mortgage. He is doing "General Farming". Robert's father was born in the United States [sic] and his mother in Indiana; Susan's parents were born in Indiana [sic Kentucky]; Clara's parents were born in Indiana; Ella's father was born in Indiana and her mother in Ohio; Sarah's parents were born in Kentucky.

The Evening Star, Tuesday, August 29, 1916 page 3 column 6 HOPEWELL. The descendants of George and Elizabeth Alexander, held a reunuion Saturday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George A McCaslin. About forty were present. Because of the rain, a big table was spread in a wagon shed, where a delightful pic- nic dinner was served. Those pres- ent were: Mr. and Mrs. George Mc- Caslin, Mr. and Mrs. John Z Hol- comb and daughter, Beaulah, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Hendricks, Thomas Alexander and family, Mr. and Mrs. R. N. McCaslin and daughter, Clara belle, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Hamilton and son Lawrence Hugh, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil McCaslin and son Max, Mr. and Mrs. George Alexander and son, Thomas, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. McCaslin and daughter Elizabeth Louise, and Miss Belle McCaslin. Special guests were T. C. List and Mr. and Mrs. Will Chandlier and son Gordon.

In the 1920 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 64-year-old Indiana-born farmer Newton and his 54-year-old Indiana-born wife Susanna [Byers] McCaslin have in their household their Indiana-born daughter, 21-year-old Clara Belle. The family is living on a farm on Mt Pleasant Road South, which Newton owns, but with a mortgage. Newton is doing "general farming". Clara has attended school in the past year. Everyone is literate and speaks English. Robert's parents were born in the United States [sic]; Susanna's parents were born in Kentucky; Clara's parents were born in Indiana

In the 1923 Clinton, Iowa City Directory, R Newton McCaslin is a worker at C Corn Syrup. He, his wife, Suie [sic] and their daughter, Clara, who is a high school teacher, live at 614 10th Av.

In the 1925 Iowa State Census for Clinton, Clinton, Iowa, 68-year-old Robert M [sic] McCaslin, his 58-year-old wife Susana [sic] [Byers] McCaslin and their daughter 26-year-old Clara B McCaslin are boarding in the house of 37-year-old Frank and 32-year-old Agnes Clark. The McCaslin family has lived in the US all their lives and in Iowa three years. Robert has completed 12 years of schooling; Susanna has completed 8 years; Clara has completed 4 years of college. They all are literate and born in Indiana. Robert's father is Kentucky-born John McCaslin and his mother is Martha L Alexander; they were married in Indiana. Susanna's father is Kentucky-born Henry S Byers and her mother is Indiana-born Maria McCauley; they were married in Indiana. Clara's father is Indiana-born Robert M [sic] McCaslin and her mother is Indiana-born Susana [sic] Byers; they were married in Indiana. Robert is engaged in "agricultural pursuits". Clara is engaged in "professional services". The McCaslins are Protestant.

In the 1930 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 74-year-old Indiana-born farmer Newton and his 64-year-old Indiana-born wife Susanna [Byers] McCaslin were married when he was 40- and she was 30-years old [abt 1896 sic, they married in 1892]. They have in their household their 31-year-old Indiana-born single daughter Clarabel. No one has any employment listed. Newton owns the farm where they are living. Newton has not served in the military. They have a radio. Everyone is literate and speaks English. Everyone's parents were born in Indiana [sic].

Robert Newton McCaslin, born 15 Mar 1856, died 19 May 1937 and was buried in 1st Mount Pleasant Cemetery Section G Row 1 Stone 1 (Find A Grave Memorial# 122589668).
