John and Sally were married when he was 23- and she was 22-years-old. Sally has borne nine children, but only eight are living. John is a farmer who rents the land he is farming. "MARY OPAL MATTLEY Longtime educator Mary Opal Mattley, 87, died Monday in a retirement home in Salem. At her request, no memorial service was held. Disposition was by cremation. Miss Mattley was born in Polk County near Corvallis. Her family moved to Oregon City when she was 10. She was graduated from the University of Oregon in 1919 and earned her master's degree at Columbia University. She taught at Marshfield High School in Coos Bay, and became principal there. She taught in Pendleton and, in the 1950s, at Theodore Roosevelt Junior High School in Eugene. Some Portland residents, including Neal Goldschmidt, were her students, according to her sister, Helen Palmer. For an interim period in the early 1940s, she and another teacher, Esther Hettinger, managed the Woodburn Hotel in Woodburn. Miss Mattley was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority, and also of the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.), P.E.O., and the Presbyterian Church.
