In the 1870 US Federal Census for Watterstown, Grant, Wisconsin, 7-year-old Edward Johnson is living with his parents, 40-year-old farmer Andrew [Arne] and 34-year-old Christine [Kjarsti] Johnson and his siblings, 13-year-old John, 10-year-old Christina, 4-year-old Inger R and 1-year-old Martin.

In the1900 US Federal Census for Fargo, Cass, North Dakota, 37-year-old Wisconsin-born Edward and his 27-year-old Minnesota-born wife Tilda [Olson] Johnson have been married seven years and have had four children, all of whom are living with them. These North Dakota-born children are 6-year-old Elmer, 4-year-old Pearl, 2-year-old Jesse [sic] and 11-month old Ella. None of the children are attending school. Elmer is a grocer and owns the family house free of mortgage. Edward's and Tilda's parents were born in Norway, and the children's father was born in Wisconsin and their mother in Minnesota.
