In the 1920 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 72-year-old Indiana-born Samuel and his 53-year-old Indiana-born third wife Stella C [Clark Irvin] Hemphill have in their household their youngest daughter 9-year-old Jessesa [sic] M. The family is living on South Dunn in a house that Samuel owns, but with a mortgage. Samuel is a cement block dealer, working out of his home. Samuel and Stella are literate. Jessesa is attending school. Samuel's parents were born in the United States. Stella's father was born in Indiana [sic] and her mother was born in Kentucky. Samuel's son by Delilah, 26-year-old Indiana-born Herschell Hemphill is living near by as his information is recorded on the same page as that of his father. Herschell and his 27-year-old Indiana-born wife Eva M [Kerns Spahr] Hemphill have in their household 11-year-old Indiana-born August [who is incorrectly recorded as a son; he is a son of Eva's marriage to Homer Spahr] and 4-1/2 year old Indiana-born James W [also incorrectly recorded as Hemphill; he, too, is a son of Homer Spahr and Eva Kerns]. The family is living in a rented house on West South Street. Herschell is a yard man for a lumber company. August has attended school in the past year. Herschell, Eva and August are literate. Everyone's parents were born in Indiana.

August Spahr Dies Suddenly

August J. (Gus) Sparh, 56, of Seymour, a former Franklin resident, died suddenly Thursday at Vassar, Mich.

The body has been taken to the Voss Funeral Home in Seymour where funeral rites will be held on Sunday, at 1:30 p.m.

The body will then be brought to the Vandivier-Parsley Funeral Home in Franklin, where friends may call after 4 p.m. on Sunday. Funeral services will be held at the Vandivier-Parsley Funeral Home on Monday at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Greenlawn cemetery.
Native of Indianapolis

Mr. Spahr was born on Dec. 14, 1908, in Indianapolis, the son of Homer and Eva Kerns Spahr.

On August 11, 1927, he and the former Catherine Chandler were married in Franklin. Three children were born to the union, Christopher L. Spahr of Rockford, Ill., Francis Eugene Spahr of Whiteland, and Miss Gloria Dianne Spahr of Seymour.

James Spahr is his only brother, and lives in Hollywood, Fla. Also surviving are six grandchildren.

Mr. Spahr was a truck driver for the Morgan Packing Company of Austin. The family moved to Seymour from Franklin in 1941. He was a member of the Trinity Methodist church of Seymour.

Gus Spahr dies; former Franklin man

FRANKLIN August J. (Gus) Spahr, 56 years old, died suddenly in Vassar, Michigan. He was a former Franklin resident but had been living in Seymour.

He was a truck driver for the Morgan Packing Company of Austin. Mr. Spahr was a native of Indianapolis.

He married Catherine Chandler in Franklin in 1927. In 1941 they moved to Seymour where they were members of the Trinity Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife; three children, Christopher L. Spahr of Rockford, Ill., Francis Eugene Spahr of Whiteland and Miss Gloria Diane Spahr of Seymour; a brother, James Spahr of Hollywood, Fla. and six grandchildren.

The funeral will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Foss Funeral Home at Seymour. The body will be brought to Franklin and friends may call at the Vandivier-Parsley Funeral Home after 4 p.m. Sunday.

A funeral will be held at the Vandivier-Parsley Funeral Home on Monday at 2 p.m. and burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
