Lane and his 39-year-old Missouri-born second wife Mary [Cloud] Lane have in their household the Missouri-born children of Jesse's first marriage to LaDora Torbitt, 23-year-old widower Uel, 21-year-old Edgar and 16-year-old Willis, and their 2-year-old Missouri-born grandson, Harold, who is the sone of Uel and an unknown. Jesse is the owner of a dry goods store, Uel is a clerk in that store and Edgar is a railroad brakeman. None of the children have attended school in the past year. Everyone but Harold is literate and can speak English.
