Shared note | In the 1900 US Federal Census for Riverton, Floyd, Iowa, 38-year-old Germany-born Andrew and his 37-year-old Illinois-born wife Emily D [Horstman] Langle [sic] have been married nine years. Emily has borne five children, but only three are living. These three Iowa-born children are 8-year-old Marie, 3-year-old Julise H [sic Julius H, mistakenly recorded as female] and one-year-old Walter A. Marie has attended school six months of the past year. Andrew is farming land he owns, free of mortgage. He and Emily can read, write and speak Engish. Andrew's and Emily's parents were born in Germany, the children's father was born in Germany and their mother in Illinois. In the 1910 US Federal Census for Portland, Multnomah, Oregon, 49-year-old Germany-born Andrew and his 49-year-old Illinois-born wife Emily D [Horstman] Langley have been married twenty years. Emily has borne five children, and all five are living [this does not match the 1900 US Census]. The four Iowa-born children are 18-year-old Marie, 14-year-old Julius H [mistakenly recorded as female on the 1900 Census], 11-year-old Walter A and 9-year-old Bertha H. Their one Oregon-born child is 2-year-old Doris H. All the children except Doris have attended school in the past year. Everyone except Doris can read, write and speak English. Andrew is a '"street" expressman. The family is living in a house that Andrew owns, free of mortgage. Andrew's and Emily's parents were born in Germany, the children's father was born in Germany and their mother in Illinois. |
