In the 1900 US Federal Census for Hamlin, Nelson, North Dakota, 71-year-old Indiana-born farmer Richard and his 66-year-old Indiana-born wife Sarah [Stevens] Carr have been married 49 years. Sarah has borne nine children but only eight are living. They have in their household their 27-year-old Minnesota-born farmer son R Harrison, their 22-year-old Iowa-born daughter-in-law Emma [McNette] Carr, their grandson 1-year-old North Dakota-born Harry L Carr, their 25-year-old school teacher daughter Belle and their 20-year-old Indiana-born hired man William Sheets. R Harrison and Emma have been married three years. Emma has born one child who is living. Richard owns the land he is farming, free of mortgage, but R Harrison is farming rented land.
