Merrill Winchester is Dead

Uriel Winchester, of Carlyle, received a telegram this morning notifying him of the death of brother, Merrill Winchester, which occurred yesterday afternoon at the soldiers home near Los Angeles. The body will be brought to Iola for interment in the old cemetery.

Merrill Winchester was the son of Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Winchester. He was born September 3, 1871 in Johnson county, Ind., and came with his parents to the Carlyle neighborhood in 1876. He grew to manhood there on his father's farm. When the Spanish war came on he enlisted in the 20th Kansas, and the military life suited him so well that when the war was over he joined the regular army in which he served until a few years ago when he was retired on account of service disabilities.

Since his retirement he has lived chiefly at the National Military home, Sawtell, Calif., where he was well taken care of until his death. He never married and the only surviving member his immediate family is his brother Uriel.
