Shared note

The 1880 US Federal Census for Graham, Jefferson, Indiana records 54-year-old, Virginia-born farmer John Deputy, his 55-year old, Virginis-born wife Emily [Kinnear] Deputy and John's daughter by Nancy Caroline [McCaslin] Deputy, 7-year-old Nannie [Nancy] Deputy. Nannie has attended school in the past year. John's parents were born in Delaware; Emily's father was born in Ireland and her mother in Virginia; Nannie's parents were born in Indiana.

On 18 Sep 1889, John B Deputy applied for an invalid pension, Application no. 729535, based on his service as a private in Co F, 9th Reg't Indiana Legion. He apparently didn't get one as there is no certificate number recorded.

The 1900 US Federal Census for Graham, Jefferson, Indiana records 32-year-old, Indiana-born farmer Alexander S McKeand, his 27-year-old, Indiana-born wife Brook [sic Nancy Brooke Deputy], their 3-year-old, Indiana-born daughter Hildred and Brooke's father, 74-year-old, Indiana-born widowed John Deputy. Alexander and Brooke have been married five years. Brooke has borne two children, but only one is living. Alexander owns his farm, free of mortgage. All the adults are literate and speak English. Alexander's parents were born in Indiana. Brooke's father was born in Indiana and her mother in Virginia. Hildred's parents were born in Indiana. John's parents were born in Delaware.

From "History of the Henry Deputy Families" by Flora M. King, written for the Deputy Reunion held at Mt. Zion M.E. Church August 20, 1937. "John was the youngest [of the Deputy siblings] and will be remembered by a number of the family of my generation. He and his brother George had some of the marks of the typical southern gentleman. Perhaps the most outstanding of John's personal traits was an invincible, incorrigible and incurable habit of smiling or laughing at everything and everybody. Some wag accused him of waking his family in the middle of the night to shake hands with them. Because of this peculiar habit he was known as laughing John, friendly John or Grassy John. The latter was with reference to where he lived. John married after the Civil War to a Miss McCaslin, to whom a child was born a daughter whom they named Brook, and who later became Mrs. McCann [sic McKeand]. The mother having died in Brook's infancy, she was cared for by her Aunt Rachel Robertson until her father's remarriage, this time to a Miss Kinneas [sic Emily Kinnear]. The second wife preceded John in death by several years. After his first marriage he located on a farm near Mt. Pisgah church, in Jefferson County."
