In the 1850 US Federal Census for District 66, Wayne, Virginia, 40-year-old Virginia-born mechanic Darby K and his 40-year-old Virginia-born wife Lyddia [sic] [Adkins] Elkins have in their household their Virginia-born children, 20-year farmer Furibin, 18-year-old Clerissa A [sic], 15-year-old farmer Kelby, 13-year-old Jacob K, 11-year-old Nancy, l0-year-old Lucinda, 7-year-old Phebe E [sic], 6-year-old Louisa A, 4-year-old Leander and 1-year-old Charles L. Darby owns $350 worth of real estate, Firibin and Clerissa each own $108 worth of real estate.

In the 1860 US Federal Census for Upper, Crawford, Arkansas,23-year-old Virginia-born farmer Jacob T [sic] and his 17-year-old Arkansas-born wife Spice {sic] {McCaslin] Elkins have in their household their 6-month old Arkansas-born daughter Victoria. Jacob owns no land of value, and only $30 worth of personal property.

Jacob K Elkins enlisted in Co H, Phelps' Reg't, Missouri {Union troops] and was mustered in on 5 Mar 1862 in Cross Hollow, Benton, Arkansas as a private. He was mustered out on 12 May 1862 in Springfield, Greene, Missouri.

In the 1870 US Federal Census for Upper, Crawford, Arkansas, 30-year-old [sic] Virginia-born farm laborer J K [Jacob K] and his 25-year-old [sic] Arkansas-born wife Spicy [sic] [McCaslin] Elkins have in their household their children, 12-year-old Arkansas-born Victory [sic], and 6-year-old Missouri-born [sic] Eveline[sic]. Spicey and Victory cannot read or write. Jacob owns $200 worth of real estate and $200 worth of personal property and is a male citizen of the US over 21 years of age.

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Upper, Crawford, Arkansas, 42-year-old Virginia-born farmer Jacob and his 38-year-old Arkansas-born wife Spicey [McCaslin] Elkins have in their household their children, 15-year-old Evaline [Matilda Evaline], 14-year-old Elamer [sic Elmer] 8-year-old Alice, 6-year-old Jane, 4-year-old Hiram, 2-year-old Frank and 1-year-old Carissa. Evaline was born in Idaho [sic], Elmer in Oregon, Alice, Jane, Hiram and Carissa in Arkansas, but Frank in Missouri, which would indicate that Jacob and Spicey moved to Idaho before 1865, went to Oregon before 1866, returned to Arkansas by 1872, went to Missouri after 1876 and returned to Arkansas before 1879. Jacob's parents were born in Virginia, Spicey's father was born in Indiana and her mother in Arkansas, and the children's father was born in Virginia and their mother in Arkansas.

A biography of Jacob Elkins' brother Leander Elkins states that J.K. was living in California in 1889.

In the 1900 US Federal Census for Township 5, Madera, California, 63-year-old West Virginia-born widower Jake A Elkins is a gold miner, living in a rented house. He has had no months unemployed in the past year; he reads, writes and speaks English. Jake's parents were born in West Virginia [when they were born this part of West Virginia was Virginia].

In the 1910 US Federal Census for Township 16, Fresno, California, 72-year-old Virginia-born widower Jacob Elkins has in his household his nephew 9-year-old California-born Marvin Beer. They are living on East Front. Jacob was married for 40 years.
