Shared note | In the 1900 US Federal Census for Saluda, Jefferson, Indiana, 53-year-old Indiana-born Thomas and his 48-year-old Indiana-born wife Rachel [Sample] Snodgrass have been married 25 years and have had six children, five are living. Four of these five Indiana-born children are living with them, 18-year-old John, 16-year-old George, 13-year-old Robert and 8-year-old Ella. Everyone in the family can read, write and speak English. Robert has attended school six months of the past year. Thomas is a plasterer, while John, George and Robert are farm laborers; all have had no month unemployed in the past year. The family is living on a farm that Thomas owns, free of mortgage. Everyone's parents (except Rachel) were born in Indiana. Rachel's father was born in Indiana and her mother in Kentucky. In the 1910 US Federal Census for Saluda, Jefferson, Indiana, 63-year-old Indiana-born Thomas and his 59-year-old Indiana-born wife Rachel [Sample] Snodgrass have been married 35 years and have had six children, three are living. These three Indiana-born children are 28-year-old John, 23-year-old Robert and 17-year-old Ella. Also in their household is their niece 12-year-old Indiana-born Bora [Orva] Stodghill. Everyone can read, write and speak English. Bora has attended school in the past year. Thomas is recorded as a laborer, although he owns the farm the family lives on, free of mortgage. No one else has an occupation recorded. Everyone's parents were born in Indiana. [sic] On 5 Jun 1917, when 30-year-old Robert Snodgrass registers for the WWI draft, he declares that he was born 14 April 1 1887 in Jefferson County, Indiana, that he currently lives at Hanover [route] #1, Jefferson, Indiana, that he is a natural born citizen. He has no employment as he is unable to work. He is single with no dependents and he cllames exemption due to physical disability. His description is medium height and build with blue eyes and black hair. He is not bald. The registrar, Robert McKeand [?] recorded that Robert was "Physically unable to perform manual labor and is mentally weak." In the 1920 and 1930 US Federal Census for Madison, Jefferson, Indiana, Robert is a patient in the Southeastern Hospital for the insane. The 1920 census records that he can read, write and speak English, however the 1930 census records that he is illiterate, although he can still speak English. |
