Indiana McCaslins

In the 1850 US Federal Census for Jasper, Crawford, Arkansas, 60-year-old Kentucky-born farmer Henry and his 40-year-old Kentucky-born wife Jane A [Hobaugh] Lewis have in their household their children, 12-year-old Sarah, 10-year-old Elijah, 9-year-old Manerva, 8-year-old Margaret, 6-year-old Retty, and 4-month old Lucinda. All the children were born in Missouri, except the youngest, Lucinda, who was born in Arkansas. This would indicate that the Lewis family moved to Arkansas from Missouri after 1844 but before Aug 1850. Also in this household is 35-year-old Missouri-born laborer Philip Hobaugh, who is Jane's brother. Sarah, Elijah and Missouri have attended school in the past year. Jane is illiterate. Henry has no land of value recorded.

In the 1860 US Federal Census for Cedar Creek, Crawford, Arkansas, 29-year-old Indiana-born farm laborer James McCaslin owns $50 worth of personal property, but no land of value. He and his 24-year-old Missouri-born wife Sarah [Lewis] McCaslin and their 3-year-old Arkansas-born son Newton S are living with Sarah's mother 44-year-old Kentucky-born Ann I [maiden name unknown] Lewis and Sarah's siblings, 19-year-old Missouri-born Manverva and 13-year-old Missouri-born Retta A [Ruby Ann Henrietta], 10-year-old Arkansas-born Malinda Lee [relationship unknown], and 6-year-old Arkansas-born James W Lee [relationship unknown]. Ann Lewis has no occupation, but she own $500 worth of real estate and $433 of personal property.

In the 1870 US Federal Census for Cedar Creek, Crawford, Arkansas, 39-year-old Indiana-born farmer James McCaslin owns $1,300 worth of real estate and $200 worth of personal property. He and his 36-year-old Missouri-born wife Sarah [Lewis] McCaslin have in their household their Arkansas-born children, 12-year-old N S [Newton Slyvester] and 7-year-old M M [Melvina Minerva]. Newton has attended school in the past year, but is recorded as being unable to write. Living next door is James' sister, 37-year-old, Arkansas-born M McCradock [sic Mary Ann McCaslin Cradduck] and her Arkansas-born sons, 8-year-old Boone [sic Daniel Boone] and 3-year-old Monroe. Mary Ann is keeping house. She has no real estate or personal property of value.

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Jasper, Crawford, Arkansas, 47-year-old Indiana-born farmer James and his 46-year-old Missouri-born wife Sarah [Lewis] McCaslin [transcribed McCarlin] have in their household James' 80-year-old Kentucky-born [sic] widowed mother Rachel [sic] [Largent] McCaslin and 23-year-old Arkansas-born housekeeper Malinda Tune. Rachel and Malinda cannot read and write. James' father was born in Indiana and his mother in North Carolina; Sarah's parents were born in Tennessee; Rachel's parents were born in Kentucky; Malinda's parents were born in Arkansas.

In the 1900 US Federal Census for Oliver Springs, Crawford, Arkansas, 44-year-old Arkansas-born farmer Nuten [sic] and his 33-year-old Arkansas-born wife Mary E [Blackwell] McCaslin have been married 19 years and have had six children, all are living. These Arkansas-born children are 18-year-old Sarah A, 14-year-old Mary T C [sic], 14-year-old Nita S, 11-year-old Thomas H, 8-year-old James W E, and 4-year-old Nellie M [sic]. Also in this household are Newton's 63-year-old Missouri-born widowed mother, Sarah [Lewis] McCaslin, Newton's 19-year-old Arkansas-born farm laborer nephew Charles S Johnson [son of Alexander Johnson and Newton's sister Melvina McCaslin] and Newton's 77-year-old Missouri-born widowed great uncle, Benjamin Hobaugh. Sarah Lewis McCaslin has borne four children but only two are living. Everyone's parents were born in Arkansas [sic], except Sarah's and Benjamin's. Their parents were born in Kentucky.

Sarah McCaslin received a widow's pension issued 26 Feb 1900, mailed 3 Mar 1900 at the rate of $10 a month to be paid from 1 Dec 1896. She requested the pension because her home has been sold due to non-payment of mortgage and she has till 17 Oct to redeem the mortgage. This house was "the home of my mother Sarah A Lewis, deceased."

The Pension Auditor was advised of Sarah McCaslins death on 26 Oct 1906.
