Newton has attended school in the past year, but is recorded as being unable to write. Living next door is James' sister, 37-year-old, Arkansas-born M McCradock [sic Mary Ann McCaslin Cradduck] and her Arkansas-born sons, 8-year-old Boone [sic Daniel Boone] and 3-year-old Monroe. Mary Ann is keeping house. She has no real estate or personal property of value. In the 1880 US Federal Census for Cedar Creek, Crawford, Arkansas, 48-year-old Kentucky-born farmer Samuel and his 41-year-old Tennessee-born wife Nancy [Nelson Frizzell Blackwell] Sweptson have in their household their 2-year-old Arkansas-born daughter Effa, Nancy's daughter from her previous marriage, 14-year-old Arkansas-born Mary Blackwell and a hired hand, 22-year-old Arkansas-born farm hand N. S. [Newton Sylvester] McKasling [sic McCaslin]]. Samuel's father was born in Virginia and his mother in Kentucky, Nancy's parents were born in Virginia, where Effa's father and mother were born is not recorded [Kentucky and Tennessee, respectively], Mary's father was born in Arkansas and her mother in Tennessee, and Newton's father was born in Indiana and his mother in Missouri. Newton and Mary will marry in about 1881. In the 1900 US Federal Census for Oliver Springs, Crawford, Arkansas, 44-year-old Arkansas-born farmer Nuten [sic] and his 33-year-old Arkansas-born wife Mary E [Blackwell] McCaslin have been married 19 years and have had six children, all are living. These Arkansas-born children are 18-year-old Sarah A, 14-year-old Mary T C [sic], 14-year-old Nita S, 11-year-old Thomas H, 8-year-old James W E, and 4-year-old Nellie M [sic]. Also in this household are Newton's 63-year-old Missouri-born widowed mother, Sarah [Lewis] McCaslin, Newton's 19-year-old Arkansas-born farm laborer nephew Charles S Johnson [son of Alexander Johnson and Newton's sister Melvina McCaslin] and Newton's 77-year-old Missouri-born widowed great uncle, Benjamin Hobaugh. Sarah Lewis McCaslin has borne four children but only two are living. Everyone's parents were born in Arkansas [sic], except Sarah's and Benjamin's. Their parents were born in Kentucky. In the 1910 US Federal Census for Oliver Springs, Crawford, Arkansas, 54-year-old Arkansas-born farmer Newton S and his 43-year-old Arkansas-born wife Mary E [Blackwell] McCaslin have been married 29 years and have had six children, all are living. Three of these Arkansas-born children are living with them, 21-year-old Thomas H, 18-year-old James W, and 14-year-old Mellie M. Only Mellie has attended school in the past year. Newton is farming land he owns, free of mortgage, with the help of his sons, Thomas and James. None of them have had an unemployed month in the past year. Everyone can, read, write and speak English. Newton's father was born in Indiana and his mother in Missouri, Mary's father was born in Arkansas and her mother in Tennessee, and the children's parents were born in Arkansas. In the 1920 US Federal Census for Oliver Springs, Crawford, Arkansas, 63-year-old Arkansas-born farmer Newt [sic] S and his 53-year-old Arkansas-born wife Mary E [Blackwell] McAslin [sic] have in their household their grandson 7-year-old Arkansas-born Thell McAslin [sic].Thell is the son of Thomas H and Alice [Gooding] McCaslin. Thell has attended school in the past year. Newton is doing general farming on land he owns, free of mortgage. Newton's and Mary's fathers were born in Indiana and their mothers in Missouri [sic]. Thell's parents were born in Arkansas. In the 1930 US Federal Census for Oliver Springs, Crawford, Arkansas, 73-year-old Arkansas-born farmer Knute [sic] S and his 63-year-old Arkansas-born wife Mary C [sic][Blackwell] McCaslin have in their household their grandson 17-year-old Arkansas-born farm laborer Thel [sic] McCaslin. Thell is the son of Thomas H and Alice [Gooding] McCaslin. Newton is doing "general farming" on rented land. Both Newton and Thell have worked on the last regularly scheduled work day. Newton has not served in the military. Everyone can read, write and speak English. Newton's father was born in Indiana and his mother in Missouri, Mary's father was born in Arkansas and her mother in Tennessee, and Thell's parents were born in Arkansas.
