Madison Courier 26 July 1949 Tuesday Illness Claims Rev. Wykoff At His Home Rites Will Be Held Thursday For Retired Methodist Minister The Rev. William Oscar Wykoff, a retired Methodist minister, died at 10:15 o'clock last night at his home, 709 Presbyterian avenue, following an illness of two months' duration. His death was attributed to infir- mities of advanced age. The deceased was 88 years of age and was a native of Madison. He was a son of the late Charles W. and Nancy Wykoff. When a young man, Mr. Wykoff learned to be a ship caulker. He later began studying for the ministry and was ordained by the Metho- dist church when about 27 years of age. He served pastorates at various points in south- ern Indiana and continued active work in the ministry until forced to retire in 1900 because of failing health. He had since resided in Mad- ison. He was married in 1888 to Miss Henrietta Wil- liams, of this city. She preceded him in death in 1907. He was married in 1924 to Mrs. Agnes Benefiel, who died on May 10th, 1945. Surviving are two daughters and five sons, Mrs. Fred C. Denny, Mrs. Fred Peddie, Lee W. Wykoff and William O. Wykoff, Jr., all of this city; Charles J. Wykoff, of Los Angeles, Calif.; Ralph Wykoff, of Sandusky, O., and Paul S. Wykoff, of Indianapolis. He also leaves a brother, James H. Wykoff, of St. Louis, Mo.; 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grand- children, and several nieces and nephews. A daughter, Grace Wykoff, preceded him in death in 1919. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning at 10:00 o'clock at the Vail Memorial funeral home. Burial will be in Springdale ceme- tery. Friends may call at the funeral home.
