In the 1870 US Federal Census for Pleasant, Johnson, Indiana, 42-year-old Ohio-born Caleb Tarlton is a prosperous farmer with $28,000 worth of real estate and $1760 worth of personal property. He and his 44-year-old Kentucky-born wife Evaline M [West }Tarlton have in their household their Indiana-born children, 19-year-old John, 18-year-old William, 16-year-old Marcia Eva, 14-year-old James, 10-year-old Charles, and 6-year-old George, and Evaline's mother, 64-year-old Kentucky-born Sophia [maiden name unknown] West.
