Shared note
In the 1900 US Federal Census for Riverton, Floyd, Iowa, 38-year-old Germany-born Andrew and his 37-year-old Illinois-born wife Emily D [Horstman] Langle [sic] have been married nine years. Emily has borne five children, but only three are living. These three Iowa-born children are 8-year-old Marie, 3-year-old Julise H [sic Julius H, mistakenly recorded as female] and one-year-old Walter A. Marie has attended school six months of the past year. Andrew is farming land he owns, free of mortgage. He and Emily can read, write and speak Engish. Andrew's and Emily's parents were born in Germany, the children's father was born in Germany and their mother in Illinois. In the 1910 US Federal Census for Portland, Multnomah, Oregon, 49-year-old Germany-born Andrew and his 49-year-old Illinois-born wife Emily D [Horstman] Langley have been married twenty years. Emily has borne five children, and all five are living [this does not match the 1900 US Census]. The four Iowa-born children are 18-year-old Marie, 14-year-old Julius H [mistakenly recorded as female on the 1900 Census], 11-year-old Walter A and 9-year-old Bertha H. Their one Oregon-born child is 2-year-old Doris H. All the children except Doris have attended school in the past year. Everyone except Doris can read, write and speak English. Andrew is a '"street" expressman. The family is living in a house that Andrew owns, free of mortgage. Andrew's and Emily's parents were born in Germany, the children's father was born in Germany and their mother in Illinois. On 2 Sep 1918, when 20-year-old Walter A Langley registers for the WWI draft, he states that he is living at 35 Malcolm Apts at 154 E 23rd in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon, that he was born 15 Jun 1898 and that he is white and native born. He does shipwork at the Albine Ship Yard. His nearest relative is his wife Mrs Pauline Langley of 154 E 23rd Malcolm Apt 35. Walter is medium height and build with brown eyes and dark hair. He has no physical disabilities which would preclude service in the military. In the 1920 US Federal Census for San Francisco, San Francisco, California, 54-year-old Iowa-born Edward S and his 46-year-old Indiana-born wife Roberta [Cruson] Rohr have in their household Roberta's aunt, 60-year-old Indiana-born Flora [Harrod] McCaslin, Flora's daughter, 24-year-old Indiana-born Pauline [McCaslin} Langley and Pauline's husband 22-year-old Indiana-born [sic] Walter Langley. The household is living in a rented house on Leavenworth Street. Edward is a salesman for a printer, Flora is a practical nurse, Pauline is a stenographer, and Walter is a coppersmith. In the 1926 and 1928 Oakland, Alameda, California Voters Registration list, Mrs Flora [sic] [Harrod] McCaslin is recorded as living at 4864 Park Blvd. She is a Republican housewife. Also recorded at this address are her daughter Mrs Pauline [McCaslin] Langley and her son-in-law Walter A Langley. Pauline is a housewife and Walter works for the Oakland Ice Company. They are Republican. (Oakland Precinct No. 285, Alameda County, 1926, Roll 24, Image 456-457) (Oakland Precinct No. 286, Alameda County, 1928, Roll 27l Image 1222) In the 1930 US Federal Census for Oakland, Alameda, California, 35-year-old Walter A Langley, his 36-year-old wife Pauline McCaslin Langley, their two children, 8-year-old Jean Langley and 4-year 3-month old Norman Langley, and her mother 70-year-old Florra [Florida Harrod] McCaslin are living in a rented house at 4864 Park Boulevard. Walter was 26 and Pauline 27 when they married indicating that they married about 1920-21. In the 1932 Oakland, Alameda, California Voters Registration list, Walter Langley and Mrs Pauline Langley are recorded as living at 4864 Park Blvd. Walter works for the National Ice Company.
