Shared note
In the 1810 US Federal Census for Washington County, Kentucky, William McCleery [McCleary] has in his household one male age 16 through 25 (himself) and one female age 16 through 25 (his wife, Betsy McCaslin). Abstracts of Jefferson County Wills and Administrations: McClary, William, (Will Book A-16) decd. 18 May 1815, Elizabeth McClary, widow and relict granted letters, John McCaslin, security (Page17) to make inventory. John McCaslin is Elizabeth McCaslin McCleary's father. Since William McCleary died on 18 May 1815, Elizabeth and her children moved in with her parents as in the 1820 US Federal Census for Jefferson County, Indiana, John McCaslon's [McCaslin] family has increased. He has in his household one male under 10 (his grandson John McCleary, Betsy's son), one male 45 and over (himself, he's 50), one female under 10 (probably Betsy's daughter), one female between 16 and 26 (his daughter, Betsy McCaslin McCleary), and one female 45 and over (who is probably his wife Sarah, but she should be 40 not 45). The family is living next door to Hugh and Charlotte (King) Snodgrass), John's brother-in-law and half sister and near Mary McCaslin Hemphill, Betsy's cousin once removed. Betsy married Robert Brown on 2 Jun 1825 in Jefferson County, Indiana. In the 1830 US Federal Census for Lancaster, Jefferson, Indiana, Robert Brown is living next door to his father-in-law John McCasland [McCaslin] and his aunt, John McCaslin's half sister Charlotte (King) Snodgrass. Robert has in his household one male between 30 and 40 (himself but his age should be between 40 and 50), one female under 5 (unknown) and one female between 30 and 40 (his wife Betsy McCaslin McCleary Brown). In the 1840 US Federal Census for Washington, Marion, Sandcreek, Jackson, Clay and Adams, Decatur, Indiana, Robt Brown has in his household one male between 50 and 60 (himself), one female between 10 and 15 (unknown) and one female between 40 and 50 (his wife Elizabeth [McCaslin McCleary] Brown. In the 1850 US Federal Census for Jackson, Decatur, Indiana, 63-year-old Robert Brown is a farmer with no property. He has in his household his 57-year-old wife Elizabeth [McCaslin McCleary] Brown. Elizabeth cannot read nor write. In the 1870 US Federal Census for Jackson, Decatur, Indiana, 75-year-old Elizabeth Brown is keeping house for 52-year-old farm laborer James Talkington and 20-year-old farm laborer John W Talkington. James, John and Elizabeth cannot read nor write. The relationship of Elizabeth to the Talkingtons is unknown, but I suspect that they are her son-in-law and grandson. In the 1880 US Federal Census for Jackson, Decatur, Indiana, 71-year-old farmer John McCleary and his 66-year-old wife Ruth [Webb] McCleary[McCleary] have in their household his mother 87-year-old E.A. [Elizabeth A McCaslin McCleary] Brown and his sister-in-law Mahala [Webb] Wheldon. John is living next door to his son 27-year-old farmer Samuel McCleary, Samuel's 30-year-old wife Eliza [Butler], their 2-year-old daughter Lilly, Eliza's brother 18-year-old farm worker Thomas Butler, and father 71-year-old widowed engineer Robert Butler.
