Shared note
In the 1850 US Federal Census for Lexington, Scott, Indiana, William H Murphy is a 30-year-old farmer with $300 worth of personal property. He and his 31-year-old wife Jane have three sons, 6-year-old James W, 4-year-old John J and 1-year-old Franklin. He is living next door to the Thomas M Reid family. After the death of his first wife Jane [Grubb], he will marry Jane Reid McCaslin, daughter of Thomas Reid. The 1870 US Federal Census for Lexington, Scott, Indiana shows that Jane and William have a blended family of "yours, mine and ours." In this household are William's children, Frank (age 21, cooper) Mary C (age 16), Lawson (age 14) and Alice (age 10), her child F.I. (Florence I, age 16 and recorded as a Murphy, Rinaldo is living with his grandfather), and their children, Andrew (age 6), Odis [sic] (age 4), Amanda (age 2) and Theodore (age 1). William is a 50-year-old Kentucky born farmer with $4,100 worth of real estate and $1,000 worth of personal property. In the 1880 US Federal Census for Lexington, Scott, Indiana, 60-year-old William is still a farmer. His and Jane's household now consists of his 20-year-old daughter Alice, and their children, 15-year-old Orlando [Andrew on the 1870 census], 8-year-old Odus [Odis on the 1870 census and he should be 14], 12-year-old Agnes [Amanda on the 1870 census], 11-year-old Theodore, 9-year-old Anna, 7-year-old Lambert, 6-year-old Algernon and 3-year-old Caddie. In the 1900 Census for Hutchinson, Reno, Kansas, 80-year-old Kentucky-born William, and his 64-year-old Indiana-born wife, Jane [Reid McCaslin] Murphy have been married 57 years. Jane has borne ten children from her two marriages and six are living. In their household is their 31-year-old Indiana-born unmarried son, Thomas L Murphy, whose occupation is listed as painter. William has no occupation listed. William's parents were born in Virginia, Jane's father was born in Maryland and her mother in Indiana. Everyone in the family can read, write and speak English.
