In the 1870 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 42-year-old Thomas H Alexander and his 41-year-old wife Sarah have in their household their children, 16-year-old Mary E, 12-year-old Margaret E, 8-year-old Sarah E [Alice], 7-year-old George and 4-year-old Hattie. John and Martha McCaslin are no longer living next door. In the 1880 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 53-year-old farmer Thomas H Alexander and his 52-year-old wife Sarah have in their household their children, widowed 26-year-old Mary (Alexander) Devore, 21-year-old Mary [should be Margaret from her age] 19-year-old Alice [who should be Sarah E from her age], 16-year-old George and 14-year-old Hattie, and 26-year-old Arch Turner, their hired man. In the 1900 US Federal Census for Needham, Johnson, Indiana, 72-year-old farmer Thomas Alexander and his 71-year-old wife Sarah have been married for 49 years. She has borne seven children and four are still living. In their household is their 34-year-old widowed daughter Hattie (Alexander) Devore and their granddaughter 13-year-old Clara Devore. Hattie has borne one child and that one (Clara) is living [sic Hattie bore a son, Charles A Devore, on 28 Aug 1888; he died 6 Jun 1889]. The census gives Hattie's last name as Alexander, which a common mistake made by census takers when recording the name of a widow living with her parents. The Franklin Democrat, Friday, August 24, 1900, Volume XLI Number 8, page 1 column 3 LOCAL NEWS ITEMS A family gathering was held last Friday at the home of R. A. Alex- ander in hour of Mrs. Mary McCaslin of Topeka, Kansas. Those present were Thomas Alexander and wife, S. B Alexander and wife, Miss Maggie F. Alexander, John McCaslin, Miss Bell McCaslin, Mrs. Louisa Crewell, Mrs. Hattie Devore and daughter, Clara, and R. H. Parr. In the 1910 US Federal Census for Needham, Johnson, Indiana, 51-year-old Illinois-born John Holcomb and his 44-year-old Indiana-born wife Hattie D [Alexander Devore] Holcomb have been married seven years. Hattie has borne three children [Clara and Charles Devore], but only one, 5-year-old Indiana-born Beulah M Holcomb, is living. John owns the land (but with a mortgage) on which he is doing general farming. John and Hattie are literate and speak English. Beulah has not attended school in the past year. John's parents were born in Illinois; Hattie's father was born in Tennessee and her mother in Indiana; Beulah's father was born in Illinois and her mother in Indiana. In the 1920 US Federal Census for Needham, Johnson, Indiana, 61-year-old, Illinois-born John Z Holcomb and his 54-year-old, Indiana-born wife Hattie [Alexander Devore] Holcomb have in their household their 15-year-old, Indiana-born daughter Beulah. The family is living on a farm on Greensburg Road that John owns, but with a mortgage. All three are literate and speak English. Beulah has attended school in the past year. John is doing general farming. John's parents were born in Illinois; Hattie's parents were born in Tennessee [sic]; Beulah's father was born in Illinois and her mother in Indiana. The Franklin Evening Star, Friday, August 19, 1921, page 3 column 6 SIXTY PEOPLE AT REUNION OF ALEXANDER FAMILY _____________________ Sixty people were present at the Alexander family reuinion which was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Parr Thursday. After a bountiful basket dinner was served the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Mrs. Mary Hamblen; vice-president, Mrs. Hattie Holcomb: and secretary and treasurer, Miss Nancy Todd. Robert Parr, 87 years of age is the oldest living member of the family and he was present at the reunion. 1930 US Federal Census for Needham, Johnson, Indiana records 64-year-old, Indiana-born widow Hattie Holcomb has in her household, her 29-year-old, Indiana-born son-in-law Hubert Mardis, her 24-year-old, Indiana-born daughter Beulah (Holcomb) Mardis, and her Indiana-born grandchildren, 4-year-old Dean H. and 3-year-old Norma J. Hattie is a farmer doing general farming. Hubert is an office clerk for an oil company. Huber and Beulah were married when he was 24- and she was 20-years-old. The adults are literate and speak English. Hattie's father was born in Tennessee and her mother in Indiana. Hubert's father was born in Kentucky and his mother in Indiana. Beulah's father was forn in Illinois and her mother in Indiana. The children's parents were born in Indiana. The 1940 US Federal Census for Needham, Johnson, Indiana records 74-year-old, Indiana-born widow Hattie Holcomb, her 35-year-old, Indiana-born widowed daughter Beulah Mardis, and Beulah's Indiana-born children, 14-year-old Dean, 13-year-old June, 10-year-old John and 3-year-old Margaret. The family was living in the same house on a farm in 1935. Hattie has completed eighth grade, Beulah has completed four years of college, Dean has completed eighth grade, June has completed seventh grade, John has completed fourth grade, and Margaret has not attended school. No one is employed or looking for work. Hattie and Beulah have an outside source of income.
