In the 1880 Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, Samuel (age 44), Emily (McCaslin) Covert (43) and their childern, Joseph N (age 17) and Mary I (age 15) are living on the farm between Emily's father Alexander McCaslin and uncle Allen McCaslin. They have a hired man, 24-year-old John Fry. In the 1900 US Federal Census for Center, Jennings, Indiana, 37-year-old Joseph N Covert is a restauranteur. He and his 33-year-old wife Zoe A (Reeder) Covert have been married 15 years and have had two children, 14-year-old Lucile and 7-year-old Paul D, both of whom are living and in their household. Also in their household is Zoe's mother, 56-year-old widow Metta M F Reeder. February 28, 1918 - North Vernon Plain Dealer Joseph N. Covert After having been confined to his bed for nine months, Joseph Newton Covert, a well-known Long Beach Resident for sixteen years, died at about 6:30 Monday night at 232 Obispo Avenue, where he and his wife made their home with their son-in-law and daughter Mrs. and Mrs. Carl Ransdell. Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Wednesday from the Holton & Son Chapel, the Rev. C. R. Hudson, pastor of the First Christian Church of Pomona and an oldtime friend of the family in Indiana officiating, assisted by the Rev. George P. Taubman, Pallbearers will be W. E. Bewrey, Charles Fetter, C. T. McGrew, C. D. Beauchamp, George Hirsch and James Lasater. Interment will be at Sunnyside cemetery, and will be private. Friends are invited to the services at the funeral parlors. Mr. Covert was born in Franklin, Ind., Sept 13, 1862. For fourteen years, before coming to Long Beach, he was in the restaurant business in North Vernon, Ind., where on April 15, 1885, he married Miss Zoe A. Grinstead. To them there were born two children Lucille, now Mrs. Ransdall, and Paul. Mr. Covert is survived by his widow and the two children. From Daily Telegram, Long Beach, California
