Mentioned in her greatgrandfather George King's will as granddaughter of "Jane deceased". In the 1860 US Federal Census for Jordan, Jasper, Indiana, John W Brooks is a 44-year-old farmer with real estate worth $500 and personal property worth $400. John is married to George Franklin McCaslin's widow Alminda McCasland (age 34) and they have a blended household of his children, 8-year-old Benjamin F, and 7-year-old Mary E Brooks, and her children, 8-year-old Cornelius and 7-year-old Mary E McCaslin. In the 1870 US Federal Census for Jordan, Jasper, Indiana, 44-year-old Almanda [McCasland McCaslin] Brooks is head of household with $750 in real estate and $225 in personal property. In her household are her children by George F McCaslin, 19-year-old farmer Cornelius McCaslin (recorded as McCastin) who has $400 worth of personal property, 17- year old Mary E McCaslin (recorded as McCastin) who has $400 worth of personal property, and her children by John W Brooks, 9-year-old John Wesly, 7-year-old Rachel A, and 2-year-old William D. John W Sr is missing and presumably died between 1868 and 1870. Aliminda's farm is close to that of Stearns F Iliff and his wife, Eleanor Hutton Iliff. Eleanor is George F McCaslin's half sister and Almanda's cousin. On the 1870 US Federal Census for Carpenter, Jasper, Indiana, Indiana-born Mary E McCaslin (recorded as 19-years-old) is recorded for a second time as a domestic servant for 25-year-old, Indiana-born William Jordan and his 24-year-old, Indiana-born wife, Olive M Jordan. Mary E [McCaslin] Erwin is recorded twice in the 1880 US Federal Census. The first time in Shelby, Tippecanoe, Indiana where she is listed on 1 June as M.E. Erwin, the 26-year-old insane wife of 36-year-old farmer A.J. [Andrew J] Erwin. They have three children, 7-year-old Wm E. [William], 3-year-old daughter N.E. and 1-year-old son C.E. The second time is on the census for Wayne, Marion, Indiana, taken on 18 June 1880, where Mary E [McCaslin] Erwin (27-years old and married) is a patient in the Indiana Hospital for the Insane (Central State Hospital). Mary E Erwin died 13 Apr 1887 in Marion County, Indiana.
