In the 1870 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, Joseph, a 46-year-old farmer, and his 38-year-old wife, Sarah A [Friker] Hemphill, have a passel of children in their family; 17-year-old Nancy J, 16-year-old Louisa A, 13-year-old Sorena, 12-year-old Sarah, 10-year-old Josephine, 7-year-old John S, 6-year-old William, and 1-year-old Itura [?]. Also in this large household are Joseph's parents, 73-year-old [sic] Samuel and 73-year-old Mary [McCaslin] Hemphill. In the 1880 US Federal Census for Clark, Johnson, Indiana, 30-year-old Indiana-born farmer Joseph and his 28-year-old Indian-born wife Hannah [Hemphill] Stroup have in their household their two Indiana-born sons, 3-year-old Odie A and 1-year-old Charley W. Also in this household is Hannah's youngest brother, 14-year-old [sic] Indiana-born laborer Tury Hemphill who has attended school in the past year. Tury Hemphill and Vida White were married on 3 Sep 1890, but they had divorced before 1900, with Vida taking custody of their son, Guy.
