In the 1860 US Federal Census for Clark, Johnson, Indiana, 30-year-old [sic] Indiana-born farmer Joseph and his 25-year-old Germany-born [sic] wife Sara [Friker] Hemphill have in their household 12-year-old David, 10-year-old Hannah, 8-year-old Jane, 6-year-old Augusta, 4-year-old Savana and 2-year-old Elizabeth. In the 1870 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, Joseph, a 46-year-old farmer, and his 38-year-old wife, Sarah A [Friker] Hemphill, have a passel of children in their family; 17-year-old Nancy J, 16-year-old Louisa A, 13-year-old Sorena, 12-year-old Sarah, 10-year-old Josephine, 7-year-old John S, 6-year-old William, and 1-year-old Itura [?]. Also in this large household are Joseph's parents, 73-year-old [sic] Samuel and 73-year-old Mary [McCaslin] Hemphill. Oliver Carlton Anderson and Amanda S Hemphill's marriage on 23 Oct 1884 in Johnson County, Indiana is recorded in Book 6, page 80. Oliver and Amanda's daughter Mirtie, born 12 Feb 1886, died 20 Jul 1890 and was buried in Second Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Needham, Johnson, Indiana. Her parents were buried in the plot next to hers. In the 1900 US Federal Census for Hendricks, Shelby, Indiana, 34-year-old Indiana-born farmer Oliver and his 41-year-old Indiana born wife Amanda [Hemphill] Anderson have been married 16-years. Amanda has born seven children, six are living. These six Indiana-born children are 12-year-old Belle, 10-year-old farm laborer William, 8-year-old Pearl, the twins, 5-year-old Bertha and 5-year-old Bert and 2-year-old Lethe. Oliver can read, write and speak English, Amanda can read and speak English, Belle and William can read, write and speak English and have attended school 5 months of the past year. Oliver is farming rented land. Everyone's parents were born in Indiana. In the 1910 US Federal Census for Marion, Shelby, Indiana, 45-year-old Indiana-born farmer laborer Oliver and his 51-year-old Indiana born wife Amanda [Hemphill] Anderson have been married 25-years. This is a first marriage for both. Amanda has born eight children, but only six are living. Four of these six Indiana-born children are living with them, 18-year-old farm laborer Earl, 15-year-old twins, cabinet finisher Bertie and housemaid Bertha, and 12-year-old housemaid Leatha [sic]. Everyone can speak English. Everyone except Amanda can read and write. The twins and Leatha have attended school in the past year. No one has had any months out of work. The family is living in a rented house. Oliver's parents were born in Indiana; Amanda's father was born in Indiana and her mother in Germany [sic]. The children's parents were born in Indiana. In the 1920 US Federal Census for Hendricks, Shelby, Indiana, 54-year-old Indiana-born Oliver and his 61-year-old Indiana born wife Manda [Amanda Hemphill] Anderson are living in a rented house at 717 South Center Street. Oliver is a sawyer in a furniture factory. Both Oliver and Amanda can read, write and speak English. Oliver's parents were born in Indiana; Amanda's father was born in Indiana and her mother in Germany [sic]. In the 1930 US Federal Census for Union, Shelby, Indiana, 65-year-old Indiana-born farmer Oliver and his 72-year-old Indiana born wife Mandy [Amanda Hemphill] Anderson were married when he was 19- and she was 27- years old. They are living on a farm that he owns at 155 Township Road. They own a radio. Oliver is doing "general farming" and has worked on the last regularly scheduled work day. He has not served in the military. Oliver and Amanda can read, write and speak English. Everyone's parents were born in Indiana. Her condition had been critical since last Friday. Born October 2, 1858, in Johnson County, the daughter of Joseph and Sara Hemphill, she had lived most of her life in Shelby County. She was married to Mr. Anderson, of Union Township, on October 23, 1884. They would have celebrated their fifty-sixth wedding anniversary next month. Survivors besides the husband are two sons, Bertie Anderson, of Indianapolis, local real estate broker; William, of this county; two daughters, Mrs. Bertha Creek, at home; Mrs. Howard Dent, of Sunman; one brother, Iturea Hemphill, of Indianapolis; thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Anderson had been a member of the Methodist Church since childhood. Funeral services will be held at the Second Mt. Pleasant church Friday at 2:00 o'clock with Dr. J.W. McFall, assisted by the Rev. Alonzo Hamilton, officiating. Burial will be made in the Second Mt. Pleasant cemetery in charge of Loren H. Murphy.
