The Hemphills are living near Mary's uncle John McCasland [McCaslin] and her aunt Charlotte King Snodgrass. In the 1840 US Federal Census for Township not stated, Johnson, Indiana, Samuel has in his household one male under 5 (Samuel), one male 5 & under 10 (William), one male 10 & under 15 (John W), two males 15 & under 20 (James H and Joseph), one male 40 & under 50 (himself), one female under 5 (Louisa), two females 5 & under 10 (Elizabeth A and Amanda), one female 10 & under 15 (Nancy), and one female 30 & under 40 (his wife, Mary McCaslin Hemphill).
