In the 1830 US Federal Census for Lancaster, Jefferson, Indiana, Samuel Hemphill has in his household two males under five (William and John W) two males between 5 and 10 (Joseph and James H), one male between 30 and 40 (himself), one female under 5 (Nancy J) and one female 30 to 40 (his wife Mary McCaslin). The Hemphills are living near Mary's uncle John McCasland [McCaslin] and her aunt Charlotte King Snodgrass. On 20 Mar 1837, Samuel Hemphill bought 40 acres of land in Johnson County, Indiana. The legal land description is Section 27 Twp 13-N Range 4E Meridian 2nd PM. His farm was located near the current town of Whiteland. In the 1840 US Federal Census for Township not stated, Johnson, Indiana, Samuel has in his household one male under 5 (Samuel), one male 5 & under 10 (William), one male 10 & under 15 (John W), two males 15 & under 20 (James H and Joseph), one male 40 & under 50 (himself), one female under 5 (Louisa), two females 5 & under 10 (Elizabeth A and Amanda), one female 10 & under 15 (Nancy), and one female 30 & under 40 (his wife, Mary McCaslin Hemphill). In the 1850 US Federal Census for Pleasant, Johnson, Indiana, Samuel, a 55-year-old Tennessee-born farmer, and his wife, 54-year-old Kentucky-born Mary [McCaslin] Hemphill, have in their household five of their six Indiana-born children; James H (age 25), William (age 20), Elizabeth A (age 18), Louisa (age 12) and Samuel (age 10). Their oldest son, Indiana-born Joseph (age 26) and his bride of less than a year, Delaware-born Sarah Ann [Friker] (age 18) are living on adjacent property. In the 1860 US Federal Census for Pleasant, Johnson, Indiana, Samuel Hemphill is a 65-year-old Virginia-born [sic] farmer with real estate worth $1,200 and personal property worth $100. His household has shrunk to include only his 64-year-old Kentucky-born wife Mary [McCaslin], and their two youngest Indiana-born children, 22-year-old Louisa (who is listed as "domestic") and 19-year-old Samuel (who is listed as a farmer). Living next door to them are their 24-year-old [sic] Indiana-born daughter Amanda, Amanda's 24-year-old Ohio-born farmer husband Hiram Hicks, and Mary's sister Margaret McCaslin White, and Margaret's husband Alexander White. In the 1870 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, Joseph, a 46-year-old farmer, and his 38-year-old wife, Sarah A [Friker] Hemphill, have a passel of children in their family; 17-year-old Nancy J, 16-year-old Louisa A, 13-year-old Sorena, 12-year-old Sarah, 10-year-old Josephine, 7-year-old John S, 6-year-old William, and 1-year-old Itura [?]. Also in this large household are Joseph's parents, 73-year-old [sic] Samuel and 73-year-old Mary [McCaslin] Hemphill. The 1880 US Federal Census for Sugar Creek, Shelby, Indiana shows Samuel (age 87 [sic]) living with his second son, James (age 56), James' wife, Elizabeth (age 51), their children, John (age 24), Albert (age 22), Minnie (age 18) and Mollie (age 15). Also in this household is Albert's wife, Cassa (age 17) and Samuel's great nephew [Joseph's son], Samuel Hemphill (age 16). This census states that Samuel's parents were both born in Pennsylvania. Samuel Hemphill died 27 Aug 1880 in Shelby County, Indiana.
