In the 1810 US Federal Census for Washington County, Kentucky, Robert McCaslin has in his household, 3 males under 10 (Richard, William R and David), one male 26 through 44 (himself), one female under 10 (7-year-old Margaret), 2 females 10 through 15 (one is 14-year-old Mary) and one female 26 through 44 (his wife Nancy Snodgrass McCaslin). Robert's brother John is also recorded on this census page. In the 1820 US Federal Census for Washington County, Kentucky, Robert McCaslin [transcribed Robt M Carttin] has in his household 3 males under 10 [Hugh is one of them], one male 10 to 16 [David], one male 16 to 18 [William], one male 16 to 26 [Richard], one male over 45 [himself], one female under 10 [Margaret], 3 females 16 to 26 [one is Mary], one female 26 to 45 [unknown], and one female over 45 [his wife Nancy Snodgrass McCaslin]. The distance between Washington County, Kentucky and Jefferson County, Indiana is approximately 100 miles; this trip takes under two hours these days, but took at least a week in the 1820's. In the 1830 US Federal Census for Lancaster, Jefferson, Indiana, Samuel Hemphill has in his household two males under five (William and John W) two males between 5 and 10 (Joseph and James H), one male between 30 and 40 (himself), one female under 5 (Nancy J) and one female 30 to 40 (his wife Mary McCaslin). The Hemphills are living near Mary's uncle John McCasland [McCaslin] and her aunt Charlotte King Snodgrass. In the 1840 US Federal Census for Township not stated, Johnson, Indiana, Samuel has in his household one male under 5 (Samuel), one male 5 & under 10 (William), one male 10 & under 15 (John W), two males 15 & under 20 (James H and Joseph), one male 40 & under 50 (himself), one female under 5 (Louisa), two females 5 & under 10 (Elizabeth A and Amanda), one female 10 & under 15 (Nancy), and one female 30 & under 40 (his wife, Mary McCaslin Hemphill). In the 1850 US Federal Census for Pleasant, Johnson, Indiana, Samuel, a 55-year-old Tennessee-born farmer, and his wife 54-year-old Kentucky-born Mary [McCaslin] Hemphill, have in their household five of their nine Indiana-born children; James H (age 25, a farmer), William (age 20, a farmer), Elizabeth A (age 18), Louisa (age 12) and Samuel (age 10). Their oldest son, Joseph (age 26, a farmer) and his bride of less than a year, Sarah Ann (age 18) are living on adjacent property. Their daughter 16-year-old Amanda Hemphill is living next door with her uncle, 50-year-old Virginia-born Alexander White and aunt, 47-year-old Kentucky-born Margaret [McCaslin] White. His household has shrunk to include only his 64-year-old Kentucky-born wife Mary [McCaslin], and their two youngest Indiana-born children, 22-year-old Louisa (who is listed as "domestic") and 19-year-old Samuel (who is listed as a farmer). Living next door to them are their 24-year-old [sic] Indiana-born daughter Amanda, Amanda's 24-year-old Ohio-born farmer husband Hiram Hicks, and Mary's sister Margaret McCaslin White, and Margaret's husband Alexander White. In the 1870 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, Joseph, a 46-year-old farmer, and his 38-year-old wife, Sarah A [Friker] Hemphill, have a passel of children in their family; 17-year-old Nancy J, 16-year-old Louisa A, 13-year-old Sorena, 12-year-old Sarah, 10-year-old Josephine, 7-year-old John S, 6-year-old William, and 1-year-old Itura [?]. Also in this large household are Joseph's parents, 73-year-old [sic] Samuel and 73-year-old Mary [McCaslin] Hemphill. Mary died 16 Sep 1870 as recorded on her tombstone in Hurricane Cemetery.
