In the 1865 Kansas State Census for Auburn, Shawnee, Kansas taken on 2 May, 41-year-old soldier Henry [Harvey] McCaslin is away at war, enlisted in the 15th Kansas Regiment, Company H. He owns real estate worth $300 and personal property worth $1,031. This census state that Harvey was born in Kentucky but that is incorrect. His 37-year-old Indiana-born wife Hannah A [Utter] McCaslin is managing the household which contains their children, 14-year-old Indiana-born Mary A, 9-year-old Iowa-born Flora B [Belle] and 3-year-old Kansas-born Milton and two unrelated people, 23-year-old "C.S. Teacher" Alan(?) J Barker, and 13-year-old Arkansas-born Samuel Henry who is "black". In the 1870 US Federal Census for Buringame, Osage, Iowa, 47-year-old Harvey McCaslin is a well-to-do farmer with $3000 worth of real estate and $1000 worth of personal property. He and his 43-year-old wife Hannah Utter McCaslin have three children at home, 18-year-old Mary-born in Indiana, 15-year-old Belle-born in Iowa and 9-year-old Milton-born in Kansas. The birth place of Belle might indicate that the family was in Iowa during the 1860 census. Perle was married for 2 months to Thomas Yancey and has a son, one-year-old Don Empie Yancey. Mary Alice and Perle are stenographers for a factory. George, Mary Alice and Perle have worked during the past year with no months of unemployment. The family is living in a rented house at 3816 East 19th. On 29 January 1912, Flora B [McCaslin] Empie, who is living at 1236 Washington Street, Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri, swears that "I am the daughter of the late Harvey McCaslin and Hannah A [Utter] McCaslin, and I know they lived together as man and wife from the time of their marriage up to the death of Harvey McCaslin, November 16, 1911, and that my mother has not remarried since my father's death." She was born 26 Jul 1855 in Indiana to Malcolm McCason [sic Harvey J McCaslin] and Hannah Utter, both born in Indiana. The informant was her daughter, Mrs Charles Abshier [Perle Empie Yancey Abshier]. She is buried in Burlingame City Cemetery, Burlingame, Osage, Kansas (Find A Grave Memorial# 18926965).
