In the 1880 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 30-year-old Indiana-born druggist William and his 24-year-old Indiana-born wife Elsie M [Brown] McCollough have in their household their 4-year-old Indiana-born daughter Ethel. The birth place of William's parents is listed as unknown; Elsie's father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother in Scotland. In the 1900 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, William a 50-year-old druggist is living with Elsie, his wife of 25 years. His children, Ethel(? very bad handwriting) who is age 24 born in Indiana, his son, Herbert a 19-year-old student and born in Indiana, and youngest child Ruth, age 11 also born in Indiana, are living with them. In the 1920 US Federal Census for Evansville, Vanderburgh, Indiana, 43-year-old Indiana-born chief librarian Ethel McCollough is head of a household for a rooming house at 1058 Riverside Avenue, which is in a "four-plex". In this household are 35-year-old Kentucky-born librarian Georgia McAfee (partner) 21-year-old Kentucky-born library cataloguer Jean Sexton (partner), and 50-year-old Illinois-born assistant librarian Mary L Tennant. Ethel, Georgia, and Jean are single; Mary is a widow. Everyone can read, write and speak English. Ethel's parents were born in Indiana, Georgia's parents were born in Kentucky, Jean's father was born in Ireland and her mother in Tennessee and Mary's parents were born in Indiana. On 3 Apr 1923, when 47-year-old Ethel Farquhar McCollough applies for a passport, she states that she has never married, that she was born 11 July 1875 at Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, that her father W B McCollough also was born in Franklin, Johnson, Indiana and now resides there, that she has never traveled outside the US. Her permanent residence is at Evansville, Indiana where she is a city librarian. She is planning to travel in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales for four months, leaving the US from the port of New York on board the President Adams on 25 April 1923. Her description is 4 ft 9 in, with medium forehead, blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion, regular nose and mouth, round chin and face. Her identification is sworn to by Adolph Stallman who has known Ethel for six years and who is a probation officier for Vanderburgh County, Indiana. She wishes her passport to be sent to her address, Audobon Apt "B" in Evansville, Indiana. Her father W B McCollough, in a letter dated 24 March 1924 [sic] and witnessed 24 March 1923 by Martin Sellers, Justice of the Peace, states that his daughter Ethel Farquhar McCollough was born in Franklin, Johnson, Indiana on 11 July 1875. On 13 Aug 1923, Ethel McCollough arrives at the port of New York on the Orbita which sailed from Cherboug on 3 August 1923. Her passport number is 265722, her birth date 11 July 1875, her birth place Franklin, Indiana and her address in the US is Evansville , Indiana. In the 1930 US Federal Census for Evansville, Vanderburgh, Indiana, 55-year-old Indiana-born librarian Ethel McCollough is head of a household for a rooming house, which she owns, on Sunset Avenue. In her household are her 80-year-old Indiana-born widowed father W B [William Baxter] McCollough, 25-year-old Ohio-born roomer Helen M Der Phyek, [?], 24-year-old Wisconsin-born roomer Alice Wireck and 24-year-old Kentucky-born servant Allie Alton. Ethel is a public librarian, William is retired, Helen is a secretary for the YWCA, Alice is a chemist for Biologica, and Allie is a housemaid. Ethel, Helen, Alice and Allie have worked on the last regularly scheduled work day. Ethel's parents were born in Indiana, William's father was born in Tennessee and his mother in Kentucky, Helen's father was born in Ohio and her mother in Kentucky, Alice's parents were born in Illinois, and Allie's parents were born in Kentucky.
