Shared note
The 1840 US Federal Census for "Township not stated", Johnson County, Indiana, shows that James McCaslin has moved to join his brothers, David and Alexander. His brother, Richard is still living in Scott County. In James' household are one male under 5 (John C), one male between 5 and 10 (James W), one male between 40 and 50 (himself), one female under 5 (Louisa should be in the next category - the census taker has crossed out "2" in that category and added one to this), one female between 5 and 10 (Elizabeth), one female between 10 and 15 (Mary Ann), one female between 15 and 20 (Margaret) and one female between 30 and 40 (his wife, Elizabeth Carr McCaslin). One person (James) is employed in agriculture. The 1850 Federal Census for Franklin Township, Johnson County, Indiana, lists the names of James' and Elizabeth's children and a granddaughter who are living in their household. They are Margaret McCaslin Stewart (age 24), Mary Ann (age 22), Elizabeth (age 19), Louisa (age 18), James W (age 16), John C (age 11), Lucy E (age 10), David (age 8) and Florence C Stewart (Margaret's daughter, age 8 months). Although James W is listed as a farmer at age 16, he has been attending school along with his brothers, John and David, and sister, Lucy. James' farm is near his brother Alexander's farm as their information is recorded on the same census page. James has property worth $2,000. In the 1860 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, James McCaslin is a 60-year-old farmer with $6,400 in real estate and $1,000 in personal property. In his household are his 55-year-old wife, Elizabeth, his sons, James W (age 24), John C (age 23) and David A (age 17) and his daughter, Lucy E (age 19). James W and John C's ages are not what would be expected from the 1850 census. Margaret, her daughter Florence, Mary Ann, Elizabeth and Louisa are no longer in James Sr's household. John C McCaslin enlisted in Company I 18th Regiment Indiana Infantry as a Corporal on 29 July 1861. He took sick at Otterville in 1 October 1861 (measles with complications resulting in lung disease), remained on the absent-sick rolls through April 1862 and was discharged at St Louis on 9 May 1862. The following McCaslins are listed in the US Civil War Draft Registration Records for the Sixth Congressional District in Indiana, Johnson County, Vol 2. They are living in the first half of Franklin Township. John C McCaslin, 25-years-old, white, farmer, married, born in Indiana, volunteer service, discharged; Allen F McCaslin, 33-years-old, white, farmer, married, born in Indiana; Gilbert McCaslin, 21-years-old, white, farmer, single, born in Indiana; David McCaslin, 28-years-old, white, farmer, single, born in Indiana; George McCaslin, 21-years-old, white, farmer, single, born in Indiana; volunteer service, discharged; William S McCaslin, 23-years-old, white, merchant, married, born in Indiana. In the 1870 US Federal Census for Erie, Neosho, Kansas, 32-year-old farmer John McCaslin has $1000 worth of real estate and $300 worth of personal property. He and his 24-year-old wife Carrie [Sellers] McCaslin have in their household their sons, 5-year-old Otis ad 3-year-old Bertie. On 13 February 1880, John C McCaslin applied for an invalid pension, He alleged that Neuralgia and measles contracted during his enlistment in the army made it difficult for him to do gainful work. In the 1880 US Federal Census for Chetopa, Neosho, Kansas, 43-year-old John McCaslin and his 37-year-old wife Carie [Carrie Sellers] have in their household their children, 15-year-old Otis, 13-year-old Burdes [Bertie], 9-year-old Grace, 7-year-old Sylvia, 4-year-old Ella, and 1-year-old Chance [Chauncey].All the children except Ella and Chauncey are attending school. In the 1885 Kansas State Census, 47-year-old carpenter J. C. McCaslin and his 41-year-old wife Carrie [Sellers] have in their household their children, 20-year-old clerk Otis, 18-year-old Bertus L, 15-year-old Grace, 12-year-old Sylvia, and 8-year-old Nellie. In the 1900 US Federal Census for Argentine, Wyandotte, Kansas, 67-year-old carpenter John C McCaslin and his 55-year-old wife Carrie [Sellers] have been married 36 years. They have had seven children, but only four are living. Two of them 33-year-old day laborer Bert and 24-year-old milinery store clerk Sylvia are living with them. The family is living at 334 Third Street in a house they own free of mortgage. In the 1905 Kansas State Census for Argentine, Wyandotte, Kansas, 67-year-old J. C. McCaslin and his 61-year-old wife Carrie have in their household two of their children, 38-year B. L. and 27-year-old Sylvia. The family owns their house free of mortgage. The Civil War Pension complete record for John C McCaslin has several statements by S A Hudiberg [Sarah Ann Sellers], one in which she states that she is the sister of Carrie [Sellers] McCaslin. Another given when she was 39-years old (abt 1881), states that her occupation is as a milliner, that she has known John McCaslin for about 20 years, from 1862 to 1868, she lived within 2-1/2 miles of him in Indiana. She also states that in the fall of 1868 both families moved to Kansas. and from that time to fall 1870, she lived within a 1/8 of a mile of John McCaslin. In 1881, Sarah is living about four miles from him in Neosha County. John C McCaslin died of pneumonia on 14 Apr 1908. No public record exists of his death, according to his physcian, Dr. D.E.
