Shared note
Her name is recorded as Malissa in "The History of Johnson County Indiana" but as Melissa in "John Winchester of New England and Some of his Descendants" The 1850 US Federal Census for Union, Johnson County, Indiana, taken on 1 June 1850, shows that Serril Winchester was born in Kentucky, is 46 years old, and a farmer worth $1800. In his household are his wife Mary Ann [Miller] (born in North Carolina, age 47), his son John M (born in Indiana, age 24 and a farmer worth $400), his daughter Jane S. (born in Indiana, age 21), his son Hervey C (born in Indiana, age 18, farmer-no net worth), his daughter Minerva (born in Indiana, age 16), his son Jordan M. (born in Indiana, age 15) and his daughter Melissa A [Malissa Ann] (born in Indiana, age 13) In the 1860 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, Wesley W McCaslin, a 30-year-old Indiana-born farmer, and his 23-year-old Indiana-born wife, Malissa A (Winchester) McCaslin have in their household their Indiana-born daughters, 2-year-old Anna E and 1-year-old Ida M, and Wesley's cousin, 20-year-old Indiana-born Samuel Hemphill (son of Samuel Hemphill and Mary McCaslin) who is listed as a farm laborer. Wesley owns real estate worth $4200 and has personal property worth $800. In the 1870 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 40-year-old Wesley W McCaslin and his 30-year-old wife Melissa A [Malissa Ann Winchester] have in their household their children, 6-year-old Abraham L, 4-year-old Mary L and 2-year-old William W, and 18-year-old John Simons, the hired man. In the 1880 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 50-year-old W.W . [Wesley White] McCaslin and his 43-year-old wife Malissa A [Winchester] have in their household their children,15-year-old Abraham L, 12-year-old William W and 4-year-old Julis C, and 19-year-old Lemuel W Tilson, Wesley's nephew and the hired man. Everyone's parents were born in Indiana, except Samuel whose father was born in Virginia and his mother in Indiana. Quote from "McCaslin/Lineberry Lineage" written in 1954 by Esther McCaslin Harrer, Malissa's granddaughter: "My father [Julius Carleton McCaslin] said that his mother, Melissa [sic] Ann, was a wonderful cook and a meticulous housekeeper. Her naturally curly hair was done in quaint "cork screw" curls, kept neat by a night cap while she slept, and brushed daily into place. The McCaslins were a deeply religious family. No work was done on Sunday, that day being spent in the nearby Methodist Protestant Church, "Pleasant Hill." Malissa died of pulmonary consumption [tuberculosis]. The letter in Mary J Morgan's pension files from Malissa's doctor, W. E. George, gives the date of her death as 12 November 1889. Malissa Ann Winchester McCaslin, born 31 May 1837 in Indiana, died 12 Nov 1889 in Johnson County, Indiana and was buried in Hurricane Cemetery, Section C Row 9 Stone 2.
