WOODS, a prominent farmer of Pleasant Township, was born in Blount County, Tenn., December 18, 1821, and was the son of William and Mary (Hannah) Woods, who were respectively natives of North Carolina and Tennessee. When he was nine years old, his parents came to Johnson County, and located in White River Township. In his early manhood, he engaged in agricultural pursuits for himself, and he has ever since given that his attention. In about 1848, he located in Pleasant Township, where he has resided ever since. He has occupied his present home, in Section 29, since 1850. His farm contains 125 acres, of which about 110 are in cultivation. It contains a handsome brick residence, and is substantially improved. He was married July 1, 1847, to Elizabeth A. Smock. She was born on the farm where Mr. Woods now lives, March 30, 1829, and was the daughter of John B. and Jane (Brewer) Smock, who were respectively natives of Pennsylvania and Kentucky. She died August 4, 1876. On the 11th day of September, 1878, Mr. Woods was married to Mrs. Margaret Tilson. She was born in Anderson County, Ky., December 30, 1835, and was the daughter of Richard A. and Lucy (Jordan) Wheat, who were natives of Virginia and Kentucky, respectively. She was married September 30, 1852 to William T. Vories. He was born in Henry County, Ky., September 2, 1833, and was the son of John and Elizabeth (Shuck) Vories, who were natives of Kentucky. Mr. Vories died February 23, 1862. On the 23d day of January, 1866, his widow was married to Robert B. Tilson. He was born in the State of Virginia, December 15, 1816, and was the son of Stephen and Anna (Buchanan) Tilson. He died June 16, 1867, after which his surviving wife remained a widow until her marriage to Mr. Woods. The first marriage of Mr. Woods resulted in the birth of twelve children: Jane A., William C., James H., Eva and Henrietta (twins), deceased, Ellen E., John E., Charles W., Annie E., Woodford W., Mary F., deceased, and Alice C. The second marriage of Mr. Woods has resulted in the birth of one child, Roscoe, deceased. The first marriage of Mrs. Woods resulted in the birth of two children: Mary I. and Laura A. Her second marriage resulted in the birth of one child, Cora. Mr. and Mrs. Woods are members of the Presbyterian Church. In politics, Mr. Woods is a republican. In 1863, he participated in the pursuit of John Morgan, serving first as captain of Company A, Ninth Battalion, and subsequently was commissioned major of the Johnson County Regiment, Indiana Legion. In the 1850 US Federal Census for Pleasant, Johnson, Indiana, 28-year-old Tennessee-born farmer Alfred and his 21-year-old Indiana-born wife Elizabeth [Smock] Woods have in their household their 2-year-old Indiana-born daughter Jane A. Alfred has no property of value listed. In the 1860 US Federal Census for Pleasant, Johnson, Indiana, 38-year-old Tennessee-born farmer, Alfred C Woods owns $6,000 worth of real estate and $800 of personal property. He and his 31-year-old Indiana-born wife Elizabeth [Smock] Woods have in their household their Indiana-born children, 12-year-old Jane A, 10-year-old Wm [William] C, 8-year-old James H, 4-year-old Ellen E, and 2-year-old John E, and Elizabeth's mother 63-year-old Kentucky-born Jane [Brewer] Smock who owns $50 worth of personal property. Jane, William and James have attended school in the past year. In the 1870 US Federal Census for Pleasant, Johnson, Indiana, 48-year-old Tennessee-born farmer, Alfred C Woods owns $8,000 worth of real estate and $1,760 of personal property. He and his 41-year-old Indiana-born wife Elizabeth [Smock] Woods have in their household their Indiana-born children, 22-year-old Jane, 20-year-old William, 18-year-old Horace [James H], 13-year-old Ellen, 11-year-old John, 9-year-old Charlie, 7-year-old Anna, 5-year-old Woodford and 4-month old Carrie, and Elizabeth's mother 73-year-old Kentucky-born Jane [Brewer] Smock. Ellen, John, Charlie and Anna have attended school in the past year. Alfred is listed as a male citizen of the United States who is over 21. In the 1880 US Federal Census for Pleasant, Johnson, Indiana, 59-year-old Tennessee-born farmer, Alfred C Woods and his 43-year-old Indiana-born second wife Margaret [Wheat Vories Tilson] Woods have in their household his Indiana-born children by his first wife Elizabeth [Smock] Woods, 28-year-old teacher Horace J [James H], 18-year-old farm laborer Charlie, 17-year-old Annie E [Anna], 15-year-old farm laborer Woodford W and 10-year-old Carrie, and their son 11-month old Indiana-born Taylor Roscoe. Horace has had five month of unemployment in the past year. Woodford and Carrie have attended school in the past year. Alfred's father was born in Virginia and his mother in Georgia, Margaret's parents were born in Indiana, and all the children's fathers were born in Tennessee and their mothers in Indiana. In the 1900 US Federal Census for Pleasant, Johnson, Indiana, 78-year-old Tennessee-born farmer, Alfred C Woods and his 64-year-old Kentucky-born [sic] second wife Margarett [sic] [Wheat Vories Tilson] Woods have been married twenty-one years and have had four children, two are living. They have in their household a boarder 27-year-old Indiana-born nurseryman James D Foy. Alfred is farming mortgaged land. Alfred's father was born in North Carolina [sic] and his mother in Tennessee [sic], Margaret's father was born in Virginia [sic] and her mother in Kentucky [sic], and James Foy's father was born in Ohio and his mother in Indiana. James Foy is recorded as being married but his wife is not present in the Woods' household.
