Shared note
In the 1850 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, Harvey McCaslin (26) is married to Hannah Utter McCaslin (23) and has a 6 month-old daughter, Frances A. He is a farmer with property worth $2,000. His farmstead is near that of his cousin, Allen McCaslin. In the 1865 Kansas State Census for Auburn, Shawnee, Kansas taken on 2 May, 41-year-old soldier Henry [Harvey] McCaslin is away at war, enlisted in the 15th Kansas Regiment, Company H. He owns real estate worth $300 and personal property worth $1,031. This census state that Harvey was born in Kentucky but that is incorrect. His 37-year-old Indiana-born wife Hannah A [Utter] McCaslin is managing the household which contains their children, 14-year-old Indiana-born Mary A, 9-year-old Iowa-born Flora B [Belle] and 3-year-old Kansas-born Milton and two unrelated people, 23-year-old "C.S. Teacher" Alan(?) J Barker, and 13-year-old Arkansas-born Samuel Henry who is "black". In the 1870 US Federal Census for Buringame, Osage, Iowa, 47-year-old Harvey McCaslin is a well-to-do farmer with $3000 worth of real estate and $1000 worth of personal property. He and his 43-year-old wife Hannah Utter McCaslin have three children at home, 18-year-old Mary-born in Indiana, 15-year-old Belle-born in Iowa and 9-year-old Milton-born in Kansas. The birth place of Belle would indicate that the family was in Iowa during the 1860 census. In the 1875 Kansas State Census for Burlingame, Osage, Iowa, 52-year-old Indiana-born H [Harvey] McCaslin owns $3,500 worth of real estate and $600 worth of personal property. He and his 48-year-old Indiana-born wife Hannah have their two youngest children, 19-year-old Iowa-born Bell [Belle] and 14-year-old Kansas-born Milton. Both Belle and Milton have attended school in the past year. In the 1880 US Federal Census for Buringame, Osage, Iowa, 56-year-old H. [Harvey] McCaslin is a retail grocer. He and his 52-year-old wife H.A. [Hannah A Utter] McCaslin have taken in boarders, Mr and Mrs W.D. Britton and grocery clerk Edgar Rulison. W.D. Britton is a RR material agent. Also in the McCaslin household is their 18-year-old son M.D. [Milton D] McCaslin, who is a laborer. In the 1885 Kansas State Census, 62-year-old Indiana-born nurseryman Harvey and his 57-year-old Indiana-born wife H A [Hannah A Utter] McCaslin have in their household their 23-year-old Kansas-born printer son Milton and Milton's wife 19-year-old Missouri-born L [Lee D Mayberry] McCaslin. The McCaslins had come to Kansas from Iowa, but Lee had come from Missouri. Harvey had enlisted in the Civil War in Kansas 7th Regiment Company F (Cavalry) and been honorably discharged. In the 1900 US Federal Census for Buringame, Osage, Iowa, 78-year-old Harvey McCaslin is once again a farmer. He and his wife, 72-year-old Hannah have been married 51 years. Three of their four children are still living, but none of them are at home. The question is which one of the three daughters was dead by 1900 as their son Milton is alive. In the 1910 US Federal Census for Buringame, Osage, Iowa, 87-year-old Harvey McCaslin is retired and living on his "own income". He and his wife, 83-year-old Hannah Utter McCaslin have been married 62 years. Three of their four children are still living, but none of them are at home. On 30 Dec 1911, when Hannah A [Utter] McCaslin applies for a "Widow's Service Pension" on the basis of Harvey's service in the Mexican War, she is living at 3104 South Park Avenue, Chicago, Cook , Illinois, which is the residence of her son-in-law Milton Beverly and her daughter, Mary Jane McCaslin Beverly.
