In the 1930 US Federal Census for Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, 29-year-old Paul T Hemphill and his 28-year-old Illinois-born wife Veltha [Weltha McCollough] Hemphill were married when he was 20- and she was 19-years-old [abt 1921].They are living in an apartment at 20 South Elder Avenue, for which Paul pays $35 a month in rent. They have a radio. Paul is a bookkeeper for a foundry and Veltha is a bookkeeper for a paper factory. Both have worked on the last regularly scheduled work day. Paul has served in WWI. They are literate and speak English. Paul's father was born in Kentucky [sic] and his mother in Indiana; Weltha's parents were born in Illinois. In the 1940 US Federal Census for Burnt Prairie, White, Illinois, 39-year-old, Indiana-born Paul Hemphill and his 39-year-old, Illinois-born wife Weltha [McCollough] Hemphill are living in a house that Paul owns worth $300. Paul has completed two years of high school, but Weltha has completed only one year of high school. In 1935, they were living in rural Cumberland County, Illinois, but not on a farm. Paul is employed as a driller-helper, has worked 42 hours in the past week and 52 weeks in the past year, earning wages or salary of $1,500. Weltha is a housewife, and is not looking for work. Neither has an outside source of income.
