Shared note
In the 1850 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, George Alexander, a 54-year-old Tennessee- born widowed farmer with $1000 worth of property, has in his household eight of his nine children; 20-year-old Tennessee- born Martha Jane, 18-year-old Tennessee-born Mary R, 16-year-old Indiana-born Robert , 14-year-old Indiana-born Margaret S, 12-year-old Indiana-born Stephen B, 10-year-old Indiana-born Rachael V, 8-year-old Indiana-born James L and 6-year old Indiana-born Rebecca E. Tennessee-born Thomas is missing as he is living with another Alexander family, which may be his uncle's In the 1860 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 43-year-old Indiana-born John McCaslin is a prosperous farmer with $7,000 worth of real estate and $1,500 worth of personal property. He and his 29-year-old Tennessee-born wife Martha (Alexander) McCaslin have in their household their children, 8-year-old Indiana-born George A, 4-year-old Indiana-born Robert N, and a child not listed in D.D. Banta’s “History of Johnson County Indiana 1888”, 1-year-old Indiana-born Emily J. The McCaslins are living next door to Martha’s brother Thomas H Alexander, John’s sister Sarah (McCaslin) Alexander and their family. In the McCaslin household is 22-year-old Indiana-born farm laborer Stephen B Alexander, another of Martha's brothers. Three of the children, Emily, Morekey McKey and Ollaver Morton, died between April and July 1865. I wonder what disease killed them, probably cholora morbis (dysentery); it must have been traumatic for the parents. The next child, Martha, survived to adulthood. In the 1870 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, John McCaslin (recorded as McCoslin) is a 45-year-old Indiana-born farmer with real estate worth $8,560 and personal property worth $2895. He and his 42-year-old Tennessee-born wife Martha [Alexander] McCaslin have in their household their Indiana-born children, 18-year-old George, 13-year-old Robert N and 3-year-old Martha B, and an 18-year-old Indiana-born “domestic servant” Mary E Turman. George and Robert have attended school in the past year. The McCaslins are no longer living next door to the Alexanders. I'm not sure which family moved. In the 1880 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 54-year-old Indiana-born John McCaslin’s farm is five farmsteads away from that of his cousin, David A McCaslin (David Wason McCaslin’s son). John and his 50-year-old Tennessee-born wife Martha J [Alexander] McCaslin have in their household their Indiana-born children, 24-year-old Robert N, 13-year-old Martha B, 9-year-old John A and 5-year-old William and a hired man, 21-year-old Kentucky-born Levi Glover. John and Martha’s oldest son, 28-year-old Indiana-born George and his 24-year-old Indiana-born wife Luna M [List] McCaslinhave the farmstead next door. John's parents were born in Kentucky; Martha's parents were born in Tennessee; the children's father was born in Indiana and their mother in Tennessee; Levi's parents were born in Kentucky. Martha died 6 June 1888.
