In the 1910 US Federal Census for Bennington, Marshall, Illinois, 38-year-old, Indiana-born Curtis [sic] Underwood and his 34-year-old, Indiana-born wife, Esther [Hazzard] Underwood have been married 15 years. Esther has borne two children and both are living. These Illinois-born children are 9-year-old John R and 2-year-old Curtis S. Curtis Sr is a farmer, doing general farming on rented land. Curtis Sr, Esther and John read write and speak English. John is attending school. Curtis Sr's parents were born in Indiana, Esther's father was born in Massachusetts and her mother in New York. John and Curtis S's parents were born in Indiana. In the 1920 US Federal Census for Brown, Champaign, Illinois, 48-year-old Indiana-born farmer Curtis E and his 43-year-old Indiana-born wife Esther [Hazzard] Underwood have in their household their two Indiana-born sons, 19-year-old farmer John and 11-year-old Curtis R, and Esther's 65-yeear old widowed mother, New York-born Martha A Molan [sic-I do't know who this is as Esther's mother is Charlotte Griffin Hazzard, per Curtis and Esther's marriage record]. In the 1940 US Federal Census for Condit, Campaign, Illinois, 39-year-old Illinois-born [sic] farmer John and his 47-year-old Illinois-born wife Neva [Smith] Underwood and their three Illinois-born children, 17-year-old Dortha, 15 year-old Delores and 6-year-old Roma Joan, are living in a rented house on a farm, for which John pays $40 a month. They were living in the same house in 1935. John has completed three years of high school. Neva has completed four years of high school. Dortha has completed four years of high school. Dolores has completed one year of high school. Roma has attended school but has not completed a year. John is a self employed farmer and is not looking for work. He has worked 60 hours in the past week and 52 weeks in the past year. Neva is a housewife who is not looking for work. Neither receive a wage nor salary, but both have outside income. Dortha and Delores are not looking for work as they are students. Neither has wages nor salary and they do not have outside income.
