In the 1880 US Federal Census for Sherman, Kearney, Nebraska, 35-year-old Indiana-born farmer John W and his 33-year-old Indiana-born wife, Mary E [McCaslin] Underwood have in their household their Indiana-born children, 12-year-old Emma D, 10-year-old Willie G, 9-year-old Elmer C, 7-year-old Albert L, 4-year-old Edgar, and one-year-old Minnie C. Minnie's birthplace of Indiana would indicate that the family moved to Nebraska after June 1879. All of the children except the two youngest, Edgar and Minnie, have attended school in the past year. John has a sprained ankle the day the census was taken. John's parents were born in Kentucky; everyone else's parents were born in Indiana. They have in their household their youngest Indiana-born children, 21-year-old elocutionist Cora M and 15-year-old James W who has attended school eight months of the past year. Also in their household is a 21-year-old Minnesota-born hired man, Issac [sic] Davis. John is farming rented land. Everyone can read, write and speak English. John's father was born in Kentucky and his mother in Virginia [sic], Mary's and the children's parents were born in Indiana; Isaac's father was born in New York and his mother in Missouri. Living next door are two of John's sons, Curtis and Eddie [sic] Underwood and their families. Twenty-eight year old Indiana-born farmer Curtis [sic Elmer C in the 1880 census] and his 24-year-old Indiana-born wife Esther [Molan] Underwood have been married five years and have had no children. Their hired man 18-year-old Indiana-born Carl Kinnear is living with them. Everyone can read write and speak English. Curtis is farming rented land. Curtis' and Esther's parents were born in Indiana; Carl's parents were born in Illinois. Twenty-four-year old Indiana-born farmer Eddie [sic Edgar] and his 23-year-old Illinois-born wife Claudie [Hatten] Underwood have been married three years. Claudie has borne two children but only one is living. This Illinois-born child is 8-month old Mable [sic].Eddie is also farming rented land. Both adults can read, write and speak English. Eddie's parents were born in Indiana; Claudie' parents were born in Illinois; Mabel's father was born in Indiana and her mother in Illinois. In the 1930 US Federal Census, 53-year-old, Indiana-born Edgar Underwood and his 53-year-old, Illinois-born Claudia [Hattan] Underwood were married when he was 20- and she was 19-years- old. they have in their household her father, 80-year-old, Iliinois-born widower Thomas Hattan. They are living on a farm and have a radio. Edgar is farming land ("general farming") that he owns. Claudia and Thomas do not have an occupation. All three are literate and speak English. Neither Edgar nor Thomas have served in the military. Edgar's parents were born in Indiana, Claudia's parents were born in Illinois, and Thomas' father was born in Virginia and his mother in the United States.
