He and his 31-year-old Kentucky-born wife Cerilda A [Walker] Underwood have in their household his Indiana-born children by his first wife, Sarah [Jones] Underwood, 18-year-old Julia Ann, 16-year-old Pricilla [sic] E, 14-year-old Emily A, 12-year-old Zarcariah L, 10-old Minerva, and 5-year-old John, and their daugher, 5 month old Sarah E. Priscilla, Emily and Zachariah have attended school in the past year.ok In the 1870 US Federal Census for Washington, Decatur, Indiana, 24-year-old Indiana-born farmer John and his 22-year-old Indiana-born wife Mary [McCaslin] Underwood have in their household their Indiana-born children, 2-year-old Emma and one-year-old William. Nothing has been entered in the columns for real estate or personal property. John is a common laborer who is a male citizen of 21 years or greater. In the 1880 US Federal Census for Sherman, Kearney, Nebraska, 35-year-old Indiana-born farmer John W and his 33-year-old Indiana-born wife, Mary E [McCaslin] Underwood have in their household their Indiana-born children, 12-year-old Emma D, 10-year-old Willie G, 9-year-old Elmer C, 7-year-old Albert L, 4-year-old Edgar, and one-year-old Minnie C. Twenty-eight year old Indiana-born farmer Curtis [sic Elmer C in the 1880 census] and his 24-year-old Indiana-born wife Esther [Molan] Underwood have been married five years and have had no children. Their hired man 18-year-old Indiana-born Carl Kinnear is living with them. Everyone can read write and speak English. Curtis is farming rented land. Curtis' and Esther's parents were born in Indiana; Carl's parents were born in Illinois. Twenty-four year old Indiana-born farmer Eddie [sic Edgar] and his 23-year-old Illinois-born wife Claudie [Hatten] Underwood have been married three years. Claudie has borne two children but only one is living. This Illinois-born child is 8-month old Mable [sic].Eddie is also farming rented land. Both adults can read, write and speak English. Eddie's parents were born in Indiana; Claudie' parents were born in Illinois; Mabel's father was born in Indiana and her mother in Illinois. In the 1910 US Federal Census for Washburn, Cazenovia, Woodford, Illinois, 65-year-old Indiana-born farmer John and his 63-year-old Indiana-born wife Mary E [McCaslin] Underwood have been married for 44 years. Mary has borne nine children, seven are living.They are living at 123 Adams Street in a rented house. John is living on his own income [retired]. Both can read, write and speak English. John's father was born in Kentucky and his mother in Virginia [sic], Mary's parents were born in Indiana. On 15 May 1918, John W Underwood, of Bargersville, Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, signed an affidavit for Martha Grimes Church McCarty, stating that he was Mary Emmaline McCaslin McCarty's brother-in-law, and that John W McCarty had married Mary Emmaline on 1 Nov 1866. He also stated that after her death on 9 Jan 1889, John McCarty married Martha Grimes Church and lived with her until his death.
