In the 1900 US Federal Census for Upper, Crawford, 49-year-old Missouri-born farmer Andrew J Poor has in his household his Arkansas-born children, 20-year-old farm laborer Jacob, 18-year-old Viola, 16-year-old Elias [sic], 14-year-old Jessey [sic] B, 12-year-old George S, 10-year-old Crawford, 7-year-old Rufus, 5-year-old Saul and 4-year-old Odies. Andrew J is farming land he owns, free of mortgage. Everyone can speak English; the only one who can write is Viola. Jacob and Crawford are illiterate; Andrew, Viola, Elias [sic], Jesse, and George can read. None of the children have attended school in the past year. Andrew's father was born in Tennessee and his mother in Kentucky; the children's father was born in Missouri and their mother in Arkansas. In the 1910 US Federal Census for Upper, Crawford, 59-year-old Missouri-born farmer widowed Andy J Poor has in his household his son 30-year-old Jake [sic], Jake's 21-year-old wife, Ora [maiden name unknown], and Andy's sons, 17-year-old Rufus, 16-year-old Sol [sic], and 14-year-old Otis. Everyone but Andy was born in Arkansas. Jake and Ora have been married less than a year. Andy owns his farm, free of mortgage.Andrew's father was born in Tennessee and his mother in Kentucky; the children's father was born in Missouri and their mother in Arkansas; Ora's parents were born in Kentucky. On 21 Feb 1913, 20-year-old Rufus Poor and 16-year-old Tonie Allen, both of Armada, Crawford, Arkansas applied for a marriage licence at the Crawford County Clerk's Office. They were married on 22 Feb 1913 by D.P. Cox, Justice of the Peace. On 5 Jun 1917, when 24-year-old Rufus Poor registers for the WWI Draft, he states that his residence is in Christie, Oklahoma, that he was born 22 Jul 1893 in Crawford County, Arkansas and is a natural born citizen. Rufus is a self-employed laborer in Christie, Oklahoma. He is married with a wife and one child. He has not served in the military. His description is tall, stout, with blue eyes and light hair. He is not bald and has no disabilities. In the 1920 US Federal Census for Upper, Crawford, Arkansas, 27-year-old Arkansas-born farmer Rufus and his 23-year-old farm laborer wife Tonie [Allen] Poor have in their household their Arkansas-born children, 6-year-old Pearl L and 5-month old Bertha. Rufus owns the land he is farming. Rufus is illiterate. Tonie can read and write. Rufus, Tonie and Pearl can speak English. Everyone's parents were born in Arkansas. In the 1930 US Federal Census for Upper, Crawford, Arkansas, 37-year-old Arkansas-born farmer Rufus and his 34-year-old wife Tony [sic] [Allen] Poor were married when he was 20- and she was 17-years old. They have in their household their Arkansas-born children, 10-year-old Bertha and 3-year-old William, and Rufus' father 79-year-old Missouri-born widowed Andy J Poor. Neither Bertha nor William have attended school in the past year. Rufus, Tonie and Bertha can read, write and speak English. Rufus' father was born in Missouri and his mother in Indiana [sic]; Tonie's parents were born in Texas [sic]; the children's parents were born in Arkansas; Andy's parents were born in the United States. Obituary from findagrave.com contributed by Tonia Holleman Rufus Poor, lifelong resident of Chester, Arkansas, died Wednesday, afternoon, August 8, 1962 in Memorial hospital following a long illness. He was 70 years old, and a retired sawmill operator and farmer. Mr. Poor was born on July 22, 1892, the son of the late A. J. and Lizzie Poor, pioneer residents of Crawford county. Survivors include his wife, Tonie Poor of the home; two sons, William of Susanville, California and Roy Allen, also of Susanville; three daughters, Bertha and Rosetta, both of Hope, Arkansas, and Pearl of Susanville; two brothers, Elias of Chester and Crofford of Fort Smith; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. The funeral service was held Sunday, August 12, 1962 at 2:30 in Freedom church near Chester with Dee Smith of Winslow officiating. Burial was in Freedom cemetery under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home.
