In the 1920 US Federal Census for Upper, Crawford, Arkansas, 35-year-old Arkansas-born farmer Elias and his 31-year-old Arkansas-born farm laborer wife May [Painter] Poor have in their household their Arkansas-born children, 14-year-old Ova, 13-year-old Vanila Dean [sic], 10-year-old Murl, 5-year-old Zella, and 3-year 2-month old Mathew. Also in this household is a homeless man, 41-year-old Arkansas-born John Eary. Ova and Vanila have attended school in the past year. Elias, May, Ova, Vanila and Murl can read, write and speak English. John Eary is illiterate, but can speak English. Elias owns the land he is farming, free of mortgage.
