In the 1900 US Federal Census for Oliver Springs, Crawford, Arkansas, 44-year-old Arkansas-born farmer Nuten [sic] and his 33-year-old Arkansas-born wife Mary E [Blackwell] McCaslin have been married 19 years and have had six children, all are living. These Arkansas-born children are 18-year-old Sarah A, 14-year-old Mary T C [sic], 14-year-old Nita S, 11-year-old Thomas H, 8-year-old James W E, and 4-year-old Nellie M [sic]. Also in this household are Newton's 63-year-old Missouri-born widowed mother, Sarah [Lewis] McCaslin, Newton's 19-year-old Arkansas-born farm laborer nephew Charles S Johnson [son of Alexander Johnson and Newton's sister Melvina McCaslin] and Newton's 77-year-old Missouri-born widowed great uncle, Benjamin Hobaugh. Sarah Lewis McCaslin has borne four children but only two are living. Everyone's parents were born in Arkansas [sic], except Sarah's and Benjamin's. Their parents were born in Kentucky. In the 1910 US Federal Census for Oliver Springs, Crawford, Arkansas, 54-year-old Arkansas-born farmer Newton S and his 43-year-old Arkansas-born wife Mary E [Blackwell] McCaslin have been married 29 years and have had six children, all are living. Three of these Arkansas-born children are living with them, 21-year-old Thomas H, 18-year-old James W, and 14-year-old Mellie M. Only Mellie has attended school in the past year. Newton is farming land he owns, free of mortgage, with the help of his sons, Thomas and James. None of them have had an unemployed month in the past year. Everyone can, read, write and speak English. Newton's father was born in Indiana and his mother in Missouri, Mary's father was born in Arkansas and her mother in Tennessee, and the children's parents were born in Arkansas. On 14 Jun 1914, 21-year-old Mr J W McCaslin [transcribed Mccarlin] and 20-year-old Miss Ella Temple, both of Rudy, Crawford, Arkansas, apply for a marriage license at the Crawford County Clerk's Office. The license was issued by C M Woffard, the County Clerk and witnessed by Wallace Oliver. They are married the next day, 15 Jun 1914, by L L Mason, Justice of the Peace. In the 1920 US Federal Census for Oliver Springs, Crawford, Arkansas, 28-year-old Arkansas-born William [James William] and his 26-year-old Arkansas-born wife Ella Granger [Temple] McCaslin have in their household their Arkansas-born children, 5-year-old Herold Lee, 3-year 2-month old Mildred, and one-year 3-month old Wilma. William is farming rented land. William and Ella can read, write and speak English. Everyone's parents were born in Arkansas [sic]. In the 1930 US Federal Census for Van Buren, Crawford, Arkansas, 38-year-old Arkansas-born James W and his 37-year-old Arkansas-born wife Ella Granger [Temple] McCaslin were married when he was 21- and she was 20-years old. They have in their household their Arkansas-born children, 15-year-old Hearal [sic] T, 13-year-old Mildred, 11-year-old Wilma, 8-year-old Lorene, 6-year-old Robert, 4-year-old Jacksey [sic] and 11-month old Jay B [sic]. Herold, Mildred and Wilma have attended school in the past year. The family is living in a rented house for which James pays $2 a month rent. He is a farm laborer and has worked on the last regularly scheduled work day. James' father was born in Missouri [sic] and his mother in Arkansas; Ella's father was born in Arkansas and her mother in Mississippi; the children's parents were born in Arkansas.
