Shared note
In the 1880 US Federal Census for Lees Creek, Crawford, Arkansas, 34-year-old Arkansas-born farmer George [transcribed as General] and his 40-year-old Tennessee-born wife Frances [Ford] McCaslin have in their household their Arkansas-born daughters, 13-year-old Mary, 5-year-old Martha, 3-year-old Rachel and one-year-old Malissa. Mary has attended school in the past year, but cannot write. George's father was born in Kentucky and his mother in Indiana, Frances' parents were born in Tennessee, and the children's father was born in Arkansas and their mother in Tennessee. Valentine is missing from this census and may be presumed to have died. On 15 Oct 1898, 25-year-old Mr Frank Williams and 19-year-old Miss Melissa McCaslin, both of Crawford County, Arkansas applied for a marriage license at the Crawford County Clerk's Office. W C Bostick, Clerk of the County Court issued it. They were married by W H Spencer, Justice of the Peace on 18 Oct 1898. Obit 31 Jan 1923 ,Chester, Arkansas (From theobituary section of a newspaper appears the following article that was found in the family bible of George Washington McCaslin's grandson Raymond Elmore Collier. Hand written on the article was the date Jan 31, 1923.) "TWO VICTIMS TAKEN WITHIN AN HOUR IN ONE FAMILY BY FLU" "George W. McCaslin, Chester Farmer and Daughter, Mrs. Williams Succumb Wednesday" "George W. McCaslin, prominent farmer of Chester, and his daughter Mrs. F. M. Williams, 42 of Fort Smith, died at the McCaslin home in Chester, early Wednesday morning, following illness from influenza. Mr. McCaslin, who was 77 years of age, Wednesday, died about 1 o'clock and his daughter died an hour later. He had been ill about two weeks and Mrs. Williams, who had gone to Chester to be with her father during his illness, was taken ill about a week ago. Mr. McCaslin, who was well known in Crawford County, is survived by three daughters by his first wife and a small daughter by his second wife, who also is living. The daughters are Mrs. Gus Collier of Van Buren, Mrs. J. W. Kimes of Haroldton, Mrs. May Lingo of Sallisaw, Okla., and Nadine McCaslin of Chester. Mrs. Williams is survived by her husband, step-mother, three sisters and small half-sister. A double funeral services was held from the family home at Chester Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock with Rev. H. Steward of the Chester Methodist Church officiating. Interment was made in the Chester cemetary." Editor's note [R Nelson Collier]: The calendar for January 1923 confirms that Jan 31 fell on a Wednesday so the article was probably published in early February 1923. In followup research Mrs. F. M. Williams, the deceased daughter, is in fact Malissa McCaslin Williams. This was confirmed when a search of Arkansas marriages 1779 - 1992 produced a record in which Malissa McCaslin married one Frank Williams in 1898.Mrs. J. W. Kimes isRachelE. McCaslin Kimes who had married John Wesley Kimes. This was also confirmed by a marriage record and census document. Mrs. Gus Collier is Martha McCaslin Collier mypaternal grandmother whose funeral I [R Nelson Collier] attended as a child in 1950. I also hold the funeral service record of family and friends attending from which much of my McCaslin research comes. The daughter listed as Mrs. May Lingo is actually Mary E McCaslin who married Milton JLingo.
