Shared note
In the 1870 census for Brunswick, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, 35-year-old New York-born engineer J.H. [James Harding] Brown and his wife 27-year-old Massachusetts-born Ellen [Eleanora Fay] have in their household their two Wisconsin-born children, Charles (age 6) and Delia (born Aug 1869). Two years later, his mother Ellen and his sister, Delia have died and his father, James, has married Anna Taft. In the 1880 US Federal Census for Brunswic [sic], Eau Claire, Wisconsin, 43-year-old New York-born engineer James and his 30-year-old Vermont-born second wife Anna [Taft] Brown have in their household his Wisconsin-born son by his first marriage to Eleanora Fay Brown, 15-year-old Chas [sic Charles], and their Wisconsin-born children, 6-year-old Ella, 4-year-old Bertha and 2-year-old Fred. Charles, Ella and Bertha have attended school in the past year. James' parents were born in New York. Anna's parents were born in Vermont. The Browns are apparently living in a double bungalow as two families are listed for one address. The other family is that of 33-year-old filer P R Glover and his 28-year-old wife Ella. In the 1885 Wisconsin State Census for Eau Claire Ward 3, Eau Claire, Jas [James] Brown has four white males [himself and his three sons, Charles Lee, Frederic Dill and James Harding Jr] and three white females [his wife Anna Sarah Taft Brown, and his two daughters, Ella Marian, Bertha Mower] in his household. His neighbors are the F.W. Deacon family and the Frank A Clay family. In 1891-1892, Charles is listed as boarding at 1236 S Farwell, his father's house. At the time of his marriage in 1895 to Katie Frances Bridell, Charles was living in Stanley, Chippewa, Wisconsin. Charles and Francis [Bridell] Brown had a son, James Harding Brown, who was born 18 May 1897 in Stanley, Wisconsin, died 18 Sep 1897 in Eau Claire, Eau Claire, Wisconsin and was buried there. His parents' names, given on his death certificate were Charles Lee Brown (born in Porterville, Wisconsin) and Francis Bridell [sic] (born in Minneapolis, Minnesota). In the 1910 US Federal Census for Stanley, Chippewa, Wisconsin, Charles is a 48-year-old railroad engineer living with his wife Frances (Katie Frances, age 32), and daughter Frances F. (age 11). In the 1920 US Federal Census for Stanley, Chippewa, Wisconsin, Charles is recorded as being a 51-year-old RR engineer. He's not telling the truth about his age as he's only aged three years in the past 10.. His wife, Francis also is fibbing about her age as she has subtracted two years from her age and says that she is 40. The only one whose age is correct is Faye (Frances Faye) who is 21-years old and a telegraph operator. In the 1930 US Federal Census for Eau Claire, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Charles and Francis [Bridell] Brown are living in a rented multiple dwelling at 1404 Beria. They pay $19 a month for rent and have no radio. Charles who says he's 59 is now an elevator operator in a tire factory. Frances says she is 49. They state that Charles was 29 and Frances 19 when they married in 1895. It that statement is correct, a little arithmetic shows that Charles should 64 and Frances should be 54. Until I find birth or death certificates, there is no way to know the truth. Charles was appointed executor of his Aunt Louise Lochschmidt Frankard Brown's will on 7 April 1937. Charles Lee Brown died in 1945 and was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Block 41 Lot 3, Eau Claire, Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
