In the 1920 US Federal Census for Waring, Ness, Kansas, 51-year-old Indiana-born house carpenter Edward W [sic] and his 44-year-old Indiana-born wife Euphemia [Snodgrass] Rae [sic Wray] have in their household their adopted 2-year 6-month old Kansas-born daughter Louise Isaac [sic]. They are living in a house that William owns. William and Euphemia can read, write and speak English. William's parents were born in England. Euphemia's parents were born in Indiana. Lucile's father was born in England and her mother was born in Kansas. In the 1930 US Federal Census for Brownell, Ness, Kansas, 63-year-old Indiana-born house carpenter William E and his 54-year-old Indiana-born wife were married when he was 34- and she was 25-years old. They have in their household their adopted daughter, 12-year-old Kansas-born Lucile I [sic]. The family is living in a house worth $8,000 that William owns, free of mortgage. They own a radio. Lucile has attended school in the past year. William has had no months out of work in the past year. He is not a military veteran. Everyone can read, write and speak English. William's father was born in England and his mother in the United States. Euphemia's parents were born in Indiana. Lucile's father was born in England and her mother in Kansas. Living next door to the Wray's are Euphemia's widowed mother, 83-year-old Lydia [sic] A [Gray] Snodgrass, and Euphemia's aunt and uncle, 75-year-old Mattie L [Snodgrass] and 78-year-old Thomas A Swan. Tribune, March 14, 2002 Louise Smith 1917-2002 HOISINGTON - Louise Smith, 84, died March 12 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born April 24, 1917, in Ness County, the daughter of W.E. and Euphemia Wray. She married Chester H. "Chet" Smith July 18, 1937, in Topeka. He died Feb. 3, 2000. A resident of Hoisington for most of her life, coming from Glendale, Calif., she was a homemaker and owner of A&W in Hoisington from 1957 to 1970. Mrs. Smith was a member of First Christian Church, past member of Eastern Star, past member of PTA and Koffee Kup bowling league, all of Hoisington. Survivors include two sons, Randy Smith of Great Bend and Ron Smith of Hoisington; one daughter, Rhonda Blazek of Hoisington; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Tillie Beltz. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington, with the Rev. Paula Bell officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington Cemetery in Hoisington. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Rosewood Services or Kans for Kids, both in care of the funeral home.
