In the 1880 US Federal Census for Blue River, Johnson, Indiana, 33-year-old Indiana-born farmer W D and his 29-year-old Indiana-born wife Nancy J [Lash] Brannigin [sic] have in their household their Indiana-born children, 9-year-old Alba L [sic], 7-year-old Nora, 5-year-old Ollie, and 2-year-old Daisy. Elba and Nora have attended school in the past year. W D's father was born in Kentucky and his mother in Indiana; everyone else's parents were born in Indiana. Franklin Republican July 24, 1891 Death of Mrs W. D. Branigin The wife of W. D. Branigin died las Monday afternoon after a severe illness of several days. She has been an invalid however for the past four years but has ever borne her sufferings patiently. The funeral services were conducted at the family residence on West Jefferson Street by Dr. W. T. Stott in the presence of a large circle of friends. The remains were taken to the cemetery near Amity for burial. Mrs. Branigin's maiden name was Nancy Jane Lash, a daughter of Samuel and Susan Lash, of who the latter is still living. She was born in 1850, being forty-one years old at the time of her death. She was born and raised on a farm about five miles south of Franklin. At the age of eighteen she was married to William D. Branigin. To them were born seven children, six of who are now living. The eldest, Leland, died when about three months old. The others, Elba, Nora, Ollie, Daisy, Verne, and Stella, the youngest, now seven years old, are left behind for a little while. A mother, a sister, two brothers, a husband , and six children number the family who found in her who has gone a loved daughter, sister, wife, and mother. In early life a most beautiful woman, prolonged sickness destroyed the once strong body, and rendered her poorly able to with stand the attack which proved fatal. Her life though uneventful, was a very busy one. Upon the altar of her family she sacrificed all. Like many another woman, her record is in the hearts of those who gathered round the family hearthstone. Let them be witness to what she hath wrought in deeds of life. From the "History of Johnson County Indiana" by Branigin: Elba L. Branigin was born in Nineveh township, Johnson county, Indiana, on the 12th day of November, 1870, and is the son of William D. and Nancy Jane (Lash) Branigin, both of whom also were born and reared in that vicinity. William D. Branigin is now an honored resident of Edinburg, this county, where he is successfully engaged in the implement business. The subject's mother is deceased. To these parents were born seven children, of whom five are living, namely: Nora L., the wife of William O. Springer, of Greenwood, Indiana; OUie A., wife of Samuel Gibbs, of Indianapolis; Daisy A., wife of Watson VanNuys, of Hopewell, Indiana; Verne, an attorney at Mt. Vernon, Washington, and Elba L.,the immediate subject of this sketch.
